Easy to say now but as soon as it kicked the first time it was time to land...things only get worse! Also better to keep the speed up a little when its kicking in boots of rudder... Did the gear survive with it extended?
Sorry for the loss. One dies and another is born.
I test flew another Xcalibur for one of my fellow club mates, another RAFscheme/P-100Rx combo with JR servos and JR DSX-12 radio.
After a near faultless test flight Roland had a couple of flights and declared himself very very happy. Mate Dave Bugz had his there too.

Hard luck, like 777 says get another one, I had a mate drop mine in on a slow take off but luckily only the fuz broke and all repaired now waiting for the weather.

The Xcalibur will wag slightly in windy or rough air, but it was the kicking I noticed as a worry.

Dave not sure how many in the club now, how about a "club" formation cup all up at once
Roland had a great time, he didn't stop talking about it. Would have been nice to get up together but boy was it cold today. Even with just two wing bolts, fuel and a puff of air in the retracts my fingers could only last 2 flights. Roll on the spring.

The Xcalibur+ (Big one) is not released yet, so no built thread. It is a bigger version of this, so you can follow a lot of what is done. There is an Xcalibur+ thread that will show more detail.
Servos need to be 8 x 10kg+ on main controls. Leads will depend on your chosen radio set up. The prototype uses S-Bus futaba with mini hubs
email me at [email protected] and I'll try and help

Dave,

Have been following tread since start, really enjoying it. Now also following Xcalibur large size.

What is 'wag' and 'kicking'? I haven't heard those terms yet.

Thanks,
Alen

Default smoke install and other points.

I have heard others talk about installing a smoke system but have not seen any pictures. So I am posting a few pictures of the smoke system that I installed. I am just wrapping up the build and have about another hour or two of work.

1. you can pretty much see the entire smoke system it's a power box pump run off of the receiver. The tank for smoke oil is 16 ounces. I can fit and identical tank beside the current one but the tank walls are very thin and it rubs on the canopy so I would need to do something to prevent the tank contacting the canopy. I have also purchased 32 ounce version of this tank and it fits in the spot as well but again contacts the canopy because it is taller. So I will see how this tank works out and possibly go with a larger tank as needed.

2. you can see in the last picture the weight that I needed to add. This Weight needed to be added to the tail section of the plane to achieve a cg at 165mm. Batteries in the nose are 2 x A 123 2500 mah batteries and a king tech 3800 3c life battery. I added this weight in the rudder servo openings with hysol.

3. If bubble trap is added above the front gear enclosure it fits perfectly in there but if you keep the stock canopy bolt it tightens against the bubble trap. Install a shorter one.

Hi Canadian Man
Good to see a smoke system fitted, looks great.
Interesting to see that you had to add weight to the rear of the plane with this setup.
Let us know how the first flight goes.

Regards

Wagging (like a dogs tail!) kick is a momentary wag!

Canadian Man
You not using rudder servos? I can't see anyway it would need tail weight like that!
I have 2 x 2200 2s Li-Pos and a 3400 3s Li-Fe ECU pack in mine with no nose weight and balanced at 170mm

There are supposed to be rudders on this plane? ???

Yes rudder servos are JR3421

I could not believe it myself at first and measured 4 times before adding the weight. Looking at the setup though it makes sense to me that the weight was needed in the rear as there are a few extra hefty items in the nose. Mainly Power box smoke pump is a hefty unit and it's ahead of cg. Igyro (not a lot of weight) in nose. King tech fuel pump is under purple fuel filter on underside of tray, but that's not an abnormal location.

Still does not add up! With the moment, that is a lot of weight.

Just confirming then that the measuring point in the manual is correct. 160mm back from the leading edge of the removable wing? So the ouside of the rear boom?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for all your advice to date. I am making some progress with my Xcalibur and will eventually get it done.
Can I please ask you what brand of building stand is the orange one in the photo ? It looks good and I need a new one. Do you sell those ?

Cheers
Dom

I agree with Dave, thats hard to imagine that much tail weight is required. My turbine is 12 oz lighter than yours, my rud servos are a bit lighter. My UAT, fuel pump, and all batteries are under the nose cone, yet i still have a glob of epoxied bird shot in the tip of the nose cone and several ounces of lead under the forward part of deck in the nose. Im not doubting your calculations, its just hard to imagine the difference between the 2. Have you weighed your plane yet?

Triple checked CG tonight and with the weights added and fuel in UAT cg comes in at 165mm. So it's real.

Listed in the powerbox manual it says pump is 110 grams.

I will weigh the plane tonight or tomorrow and let you guys know.

Helium tailplane :-)
Dom
Its a K&S Aircraft stand, I have four, they are brilliant. Have not been able to get them for sometime, but you should be able to go to Japan, maybe Model Engines deal with them still? http://www.ks-j.net/kands/AutoMakePa...indw-E.cgi?756
