Real afterburner on model in flight
I know this is an EDF but still pretty cool and creative, although a bit dangerous.

Better have a HUGE model to put it in. Looks like it drank a quart of fuel in about 40 seconds. (lol)

Read the AMA rules regarding afterburners on turbines.....Just ion case you don't already know.
See rule # 13 http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/510-a.pdf

Ummm.... no.
Read #13. it says.... "Afterburners are prohibited." (as in PERIOD)
The last part that says "are acceptable only if engine manufacturer provided and supported by development testing and user training." are in ref to... Other special controls such as water injection, thrust reversers, variable
nozzles, etc.

As a point of information, some years ago, like in the late nineties, a company in Germany produced a turbine called the "Skypipe". It had a long afterburner exhaust nozzle of divergent/convergant design which contained an afterburner flame holder and fuel supply nozzle(s).
As I recall, it was advertised in RCJI, and sold by one of the European distributors. They were never introduced here for USA sales.
I do not know when they ceased production.
I am sure some of you recall it, and some may have seen it run.
Perhaps Ali could shed more light on these engines.

I have watch a few Jets fly and they are awesome. My brain don't work quick enough to handle the speed these were reaching, just imagine what an afterburner would do. The look best at night, In the late 60's I was stationed at the Naval Air Station Key West and the Navy had 4 F4 Phantoms sitting on a hot pad 24-7. From time to time they would scramble one or two and my office had a look right down the runway. One night around 8:00 or so something happened and all 4 of the Phantoms were scrambled in full afterburner. Every building on base was shaking and the sight of them lifting off and going vertical was a sight to be see. Would love to see a model do the same thing.

Many years ago I saw a plane with a functioning afterburner flying at the Ohain Whittle meeting in Germany. It was a technical feat, but honestly you would struggle to even know it was being used. There was no obvious flame and just a roar when it was ignited and the plane had more power. There are very inefficient and drink fuel. It was developed before the current crop of 180 and 220 turbines, which do the job better and much more efficiently. This subject gets revised from time to time but it is highly unlikely it will be for sale for our model turbines. I do also recall seeing the Skypipe, but never in the air. The foamy EDF with a flame coming out if it is not an afterburner, just a flame that is dangerous fire hazard. It is far from cool.
