1:4.8 Scale SAAB J-29E/F Tunnan
Look what I picked up on the way to the flying field....
I was just leaving home to go flying (it was a gorgeous day here in the Valley of the Sun) when my broker called and said that my Mibo SAAB J-29 Tunnan (available from Ultimate Jets) had cleared customs and was available for pickup. Thirty minutes, it was in the back of my SUV and off I went to the field to unpack it.
The plane is 1:4.8 scale which gives it a wingspan of 90" and a length of 84". The plane arrived in a single large box (85" L x 17" W x 24" H) that was just filled to the brim the plane, accessories, and lots and lots of packing material. Everything was individually wrapped in bubble wrap and wasn't damaged during shipping. All the little parts were grouped together bagged and labeled
The surface detailing and molding quality seem outstanding with lots of panel lines and rivets. The fuselage skin is a inner and outer layup of glass with an airex foam core with some reinforcing carbon in various areas. All structural bulkheads are carbon fibre skins over an aircraft ply core (no honeycomb here, folks) and were preinstalled. The main gear and nose gear were already installed as were the nose gear doors. The landing gear and brakes are electrically operated and come with a controller. I had to wait until I got home to lower the gear as I didn't have an extra 3S lipo with me but we test fit most of the components together at the field and had a good look.
First impression is that this will be one bad azz jet model and certainly something a bit different from the typical lineup at the field of the popular F-16, Sabre, F-4, etc. Indeed, this kit is the first Gen 2 Tunnan in the US. My plan is to finish the plane in FliteMetal in the scheme of SE-DXB which is still being flown by the Swedish Historical Flight. I hope to have it flying in early spring and will be bringing it to the Team USA qualifier for the 2015 Jet World Masters.
Regards,
Jim

Looks great Jim. I am always in awe of flight metal planes, but I wondered how do you apply the material to a plane that already has so much surface detailing? And the airex core planes I have messed with have such a relatively thin skin, I can't see how you burnish without denting the skin?
I hope you can post pictures when you apply that metal.

Congratulations on your new model! I have been waiting for a build like this..
Do you know if this kit has any relations to the one sold by Der Schweighofer in Austria? That model is the exact same size, and is designed by Manfred Eberhard.
I was hoping to see it in details at JetPower, but before I got that far, they had sold out.
I have a 1/6 model my self. Nice in the air, but the ground handling kan be scary, with that narrow track. I have lots of pictures of the fullsize, if you need documentation. It is not SE-DXB, but another well preserved -F.
Not sure about Flite-Metal. The original has some kind of anodizing, and it is pretty far from natural aluminum.
Kind regards
Lars

Awesome Jim! She looks fantastic. I can't wait to see the build thread as you move forward. This is going to be a great project for you. Can you post some vids of the gear working when you get a chance?
Man that thing is bigger than I thought it would be. Sweet bird my friend.

The photos I took yesterday were a bit washed out from the sun, so I took a few more pics of the various components in the kit as well as a photo of the jet with the flight surfaces taped on.
Also, here is a link to a video of the electric gear retraction/extension. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLozc...ature=youtu.be The "female" voice you hear is Nicole, the voice of my Jeti DC-16 transmitter.
Photos:
1) Bagged and tagged small bits, mostly hinges and control horns
2) Landing gear controller and instructions
3) Wood bits, wing servo covers, wing fences
4) Inside/outside of main gear doors, rudder
5) Top/bottom of flaps
6) Top/Bottom of elevators and ailerons
7) Inlet ducts
8) Fuel tank (pre-plumbed), hinge pins
9) Clear windscreen, canopy, and canopy frame
10) Exhaust pipe
11) Left side view
Regards,
Jim

Nice pictures Jim. Thanks!
I heard that some customers had a failure of the o'ring on fuel tank cap on the Mibo Gen4 A-10, resulting in a leak messing up the fuselage.
The o'ring shall be covered with lube before fastening the cap. Also check that it stays seated properly ( Bogo's recommendation ). Please keep an eye on this.

Kit looks great! Landing gear too, but I think the nose wheel is too small, and the extention angle should be more like 100 degrees. I am not very much into small scale details, but the gear is visible from far away :-)

Hi Henke.
This thread is not about Antons cockpits (sorryJim)
Cockpits to jas 39 1/6,J35 Draken 1/5 and 1/6,5 and J37 Viggen 1/9 are printed.and soon there will be a F16 1/4,6.
Some drawings like the Hawk seat are made just for fun.
You can se pics on www.jetsweden.se in the Jas 39 and Antons cockpit threads.

I've been following your Gripen development on the Swede thread and am trying to convince you to sell me one when you have them developed. Very impressive work. This Tunnan doesn't have a cockpit kit so I'd be quite interested in purchasing a J-29 cockpit if you'll sell one. Please send me a PM if interested.
Regards,
Jim
P.S.: I'll be starting the build on the Tunnan soon; I'm just finishing off a Hunter now.
