Pirotti Rebel Flight report.

Maiden flight was absolutely awesome. The nicest flying jet for me to date, I like it even better than my Shockwave. It's really light on the wing, flies straight as an arrow and floats for ever on landing. I've posted a few youtube videos, enjoy.

Turbine Ground Run-Up test Video:

Smoke System Ground Test Video:

Maiden Flight Video:
Note: It's a little far and the sky was not great, sorry for the video production quality.

I have the same color scheme and I'm really happy with mine! Congrats on the test flights. I did 15 flights on mine this weekend at our big jet fly in Texas last week. I'm just flying mine with a Rabbit though. I fly with an 8 minute timer and have about 1-1.5" of fuel left in the tank. I also feel we get a bit of airframe noise thru the inlet/canopy setup, so I've added a second set of "canopy hooks" - about 9 inches forward of the kit supplied ones (resting on the canopy sill). I currently have about 70 flights on it this year.

Question: what did you do with your HDT? Did you remove the screen from the housing? Just wondering what happened with the functionality of the HDT (no access to the menu buttons?)

Hi Ron,
Thank you. It does have a bit of a whistle at speed, I kind of like it. You were able to reduce that with the additional attachment points? Regarding the HDT, I purchased the optional on-board HDT. It's a screen only that shuts-off a minute or so after startup. I added a little charge port to connect the regular HDT, if I need it. With the on-board I get everything I need when flying. Hope that helps.

Thanks Skunk - I did not know there was a screen available as standalone. That's a good idea!
The second set of canopy hooks I added was mainly just being conservative. I like doing aerobatics, and with that long canopy, I felt might help with keeping the canopy more secure. I'd hate to have the canopy flex during flight and pop off! (I've not heard of this happening...)

Nice pic and congrats Geoff.

Hey - side note. What are you using for high rates on ail and ele? I'm at the stated rates in the instructions and it's roll-rate is pretty slow, and they don't indicate high rate figures.

Hi Tom, Jetpower can sometimes be found in news agents. Or else you can order a single copy or subscription from their website:
JETPower / The international magazin for radio controlled jet models | Ein weiterer WordPress-Blog

There's also the option of a digital copy on ipad/android.

Thanks! Yes I found the roll rate to be a little slow too. I actually used about 120% rates and reduced expo right down on ailerons. Just one thing to check is to make sure you are not overly nose heavy on the CG. That can make controls a little slugish too.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks, but you wouldn't happen to have what that translates into in deflection? I believe the instructions call for 20mm for ail, what are you at for high rates on ail and ele in mm?

Unfortunately not, I sold my Rebel to a chap from another city a month ago to make way for a new project so I don't have access to it any more to measure. At a guess though I would say ailerons have gone from 20 - 25mm? sorry I can't be more useful to you it might be an adjust and test type scenario.

Bummer - no problem. I'll add a few mm at a time until I'm happy.

thanks.

HI Berto,

Amazing, looking forward to many flights as well.

BTW- could you share with me your high rates for AIL and ELE (in mms) and any potential expo your using?

thanks.

First flight was on October 26 2014.

Do not know the deflections exactly, believe I used the recommended and that worked fine fo me (I am not one of those show guys ;-) ).
Mhhh, I write this and I believe I added some more up on elevator. Also I measured mine during the build in degrees with the iPhone.

Will measure them for you when I have build up the plane, will try to do that somewhere this week.

I do not use high or low rates.
Expo is just about 10 or 15% but I will check (although a lot of this is depending on your set up were the control rod is on the servo arm and control horn).

Best regards,
Berto.

So, build up the Rebel and placed it on the Xicoy scale.

Dry weight with UAT full, tank and smoke tank empty: 11920 grams (will weight it also sometime with tank and smoke tank full, will be then about 15,5kg I guess)

Aileron up: 22mm
Aileron down: 22mm

Elevator up: 24mm
Elevator down: 20mm

Rudder left: 55mm
Rudder right: 55mm

Start flap: 35mm (elevator mix 3mm down)
Full flap: 95mm (elevator mix 5mm down)

Expo on ailerons: 20%
Expo on elevator: 15%
Expo on rudder: 25%

Best regards,
Berto.

Thank you, Berto. You fly with only one rate?

During flight 328 the canopy blew off (apparently my own fault) and disconnected my gear battery in one or the other way.
Made a safe gear up landing without flaps on the grass.
Small damage on the canopy and some grass in the fuselage is allName: 1f60e.png

Hi guys,

I'm starting to get more and more comfortable with the Rebel and pushing it up to ~200Kmh with the Cheetah 160. I've noticed a little wing oscillation which I can fix dialing back the gyro a bit, but I also noticed a slight climb when I am at full throttle. Is anyone else seeing this? Should I add a full throttle to down elevator mix or? thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Skunk, yes she is a fast bird with this turbine. I feel it’s a great combo😀

Gary, she’s been a great addition to the hanger! You built her right and it shows!

Marcus
