Hope this deal would be good for both countries!

The interesting thing that the F-18 almost won the contract, but there where so many annoying technology sharing restrictions from the U.S. that made any development or customizing of the aircraft impossible here...not to mention our president was pissed recently when she found his personal cellphone wiretapped by the NSA, and women are quite sensible to this matters, LOL

Anyway, this is not bad news at all for the U.S. . the engines are still made there...

I hope Belgium makes the same decision for replacing their F-16's!
our defence minister wants to buy F-35's, but he's only lobbying to be the next bigshot at NATO.

Actually the Gripen engine (RM12) is built by Volvo Aero in Sweden. The engine, which is an improved and upgraded General Electric F404, is built under a licence agreement with GE from the early eighties.

Here is a nice cut-away drawing of the Gripen RM12 engine:

I was wrong! thanks for the correction.. Thought that the F404 was used in the Gripen, and is this engine 100% made in Sweden?

Yes, the RM12 is built in Sweden, but I was slightly wrong about the company. It turns out that Volvo Aero was incorporated into GKN Aerospace Sweden in 2012. GKN is a British company. While the engine is built in Sweden, as is usually the case, some of its components come from abroad.

Although its a major topic for the resistance... er I mean liberals in Canada, the F-35 may not go forward for us either. The Gripen has been brought up in more than a few newscasts. I hope that if we don't go with the F-35 that the Super Hornet would be the number 2 simply because I think we need a twin engine for the harsh climate but I'll tell ya what, those Gripens are very impressive birds and would serve any country very will I think.

From the neighbour ...gotta respect the fact that for a small country Sweden has always produced exellent aircraft. I leave the ice hockey, cars, music, floorball out for now

Yeahhhh, and the reason for that itīs not because itīs a better airplane, Itīs because some politicians put a lot o money on their pockets.
Thatīs a shame!

I donīt agree with you Ricardo, since years ago our military and aero engineers had a preference for the Gripen, seems that reason prevailed this time.

I respect the point of view of Mr. Erbroens. But for me seems like a VERY naive opinion of what happens in Brazil.
Also this phrase " seems that reason prevailed this time." Itīs at least very funny! Iīm still laughing .
When any kind of reason prevailed in that country?!? And why this time? With millions or billions of dollars at stake?
Donīt get me wrong Iīm sure the Gripen is a good airplane and all but iīm under the impression that if you get the worst USAF pilot on a bad hair day and put this guy on a Hornet F-18, not even a Super Hornet, just a good an old Hornet with the paint chipped and a flat tyre.
This guy will knock this Gripen out of the sky so fast, that the Gripen pilot will still try to take the # of the license plate of the truck that hit him.
Even so I respect his opinion

LOL, SJN could you have turned the AI controlled Hornet down any further? I won't be impressed until you put the Hornet on Pro and put some missiles on it. Good try though

If USA invaded Brazil, that will be the best thing in many century that happens to that Country, muuuuuuuch better the the Portuguese Invasion, and make Brazil a huge Porto Rico. ahUAHUAHuAHu

Hmm, the term "slack-jawed yokel" comes to mind.
You're a republican voter, right?
A little chauvinism never hurt anybody, but this is over the top.

You're Right Ricardo, exactly like a young student pilot flying the Rafale could knock out the F18 in a few seconds...

F18 and Rafale don't belongs to the same category than Grippen, why buying 20 F18 or 10 Rafales for the price of 30 Grippen, if this aircraft is doing the job expected by Brasilian Air force.
They now what they need and what they can pay...probably much better than you
