Default Should we ban Diesel fuel

HI all, this was going to get attention sooner or later.
The problem that is appearing now, that diesel fuel is distroying asphalt surfaces.
Unlike Jet-A and Kero fuels that only stain the asphalt. Diesel fuel, when spilt on asphalt, will crumple and only be repaired by removeing a section .
Overflow tanks are great, but not always used.

Here is one man looking for help.
I did a no-no. I worked on my return line in the condominium complex parking lot without a catch basin not realizing what I was getting into. Needless to say a bit of diesel got on the asphalt of the parking lot. Not my parking lot.
I tried to "cover" the area with dirt to soak up the diesel, but it has already softened up the asphalt. Of course the local rug rat next door found a stick and started really making a hole in the asphalt which I covered back twice. I know it is a matter of time before someone chews my asphalt for doing such a stupid thing (not that I don't deserve it).
Is there a way to fix asphalt that has been damaged by diesel?
I figured I am not the first one who has done this. Thought someone might know the "secret" of asphalt repair.

Fly off grass, we don't have the luxury down under to fly of bitumen every weekend or every time we fly. Less harsh anyways on model and tyres.

Good question Pete!

After seeing the damage that diesel is causing on the taxi way, I'm going to go back to Jet A. We have the privilege of flying at a beautiful airport, I don't want to lose it over something as silly as spilled fuel.

How about mandatory catching of overflow? Not that big of a deal.

I think we should ban it because it makes your plane smell like a truck!

Drip pans can be an easy fix for this, we use them in Army aviation when we bring the aircraft in the hangers

Better to just give the pilots a tongue lashing. You shouldn't spill fuel all over the ground regardless of whether you're using kero or diesel.

Pete, are you using the Chinese diesel? if you are then you should go back to kero because what's in there diesel is the same stuff they put in there glue and look what its doing to composite structures!

Cut out the damaged area and get some hot mix if you have an asphalt plant near you. If not find out if they are paving near you and beg an amount needed for the repair. Just sayin'

Sure lets just Ban everything........ Maybe you should work things out with your members that don't know how to fill their planes. Overflow tank, problem solved! I'm not giving up my Diesel 2, convenient and I like the smoke when it flames out, it is great indicator if your flying in busy air space.

We are only a guest at most airports, we will be long gone, before they put concrete down.

Wrong! If you are pouring anything on the ground because you're too bloody lazy to hook up a taxi tank or overflow tank you should be shot.
Even if it's at an airport, no petroleum products should be able to make its way to the ground. Same goes for our gassers. You should look it up, the amount of drinkable water that is contaminated by one drop of gasoline...

No need to ban it. Just be a little smarter with it.

I have a great idea...lets just ban RCPete!

It's like killing two birds with one stone...no more diesel spills and one less French accent to listen too...LOL!

Keep it clean, don't throw fuel on the ground. Very easy actually.

Pete,

You are absolutely right, we are only guests at the airports and you & everyone on here are a member with a PRIVILEDGE to fly at our local clubs. As most on here already stated, why in the hell would anyone fuel a plane with out an overflow tank plugged in? Shouldn't we do a better job of following common sense rules and police the guys without common sense at the time they are caught, instead of starting a lets ban some more of our hobby or better yet maybe we can sue someone rally? Considering Jet A, Kero and Diesel all come from the same fuel family, maybe we should ban the use of all those fuels, all together, as they will all cause damage over time? Lets not forget gasoline & Nitro, I can go to my local club that doesn't allow turbines and find all kind of stained spots from spills so maybe we should just ban all fuels and everyone go electric? It's bad enough we have the FAA trying to shut down RC and we have guys like you giving them more ammunition to shut us down. Now, we are all contaminating the water supply and environment because we can't hook up a bloody overflow tank and you want us to fuel in the grass to save the asphalt. This is an important issue, so maybe you should have started a " Remember to use an overflow tank" thread and posted a reminder to all the knit wits out there that think they are above using the tank and want to ruin a good thing instead of your Lets Ban Diesel...

+1...I use an old coffee can. Keep the lid, seals up the can for transport after the day is done. The overflow fuel can then be properly disposed of...like for an extra boost when lighting the charcoal grill (oh crap, I just ratted myself out on causing air pollution by burning charcoal...dang!)

Easy fix, no overflow tank, no flying. We had to instil this rule at our field as our state is a one drop rule state for fuel hitting the ground.
