Default 2.6m F-117 NightHawk, Twin SimJet 2300 - Build form scratch.

Hi All

Couple of days ago I started the biggest project in my RC history.

I'm building a F-117 Nighthawk to be powered by 2 x SimJet 2300.

The length is 2.6m and the wing span is 1.8m.

I'll be building it the traditional way, Foam core wings and rudders, Balsa and plywood fuselage.

Very long time ago I built a 60 size propeller version of the F-117 from the only model design available and it did fly very well, but it is stand-off scale so will not look good in large size.

So I decided to make my own design and make as scale as possible, so I bought a full size 3 view drawings in dxf format & modify it then print it.

The major challenge is the wing design, so after a lot of reading and researching I decided to use a semi-symmetrical aerofoil at the wing root and full-symmetrical aerofoil at the wing tip with 1 degree of washout.

It will have a full scale cockpit, Electric retracts, lights and opening canopy.

Wish me luck.

Hi AB

That a very nice model, I was going to build mine 3m long, but the exhaust pipes were gonna be so hard to figure out and make, so I reduced the size to be able to use normal size pipes.

Hi Thomas

You can get the plans for the B2 from here
http://casadabalsa.com/DigitalPlans/...duct&id_lang=1

They have nice plans if you are interested in scratch building.

Great Project Moa,

This will sure turn heads at the flight line. The Aviation Design F117 was a great flyer by all accounts.. A bit hard to orientate on, (obviously) but flew quite stable at the relatively small scale it was.

Hi Roger

The aviation design F117 is almost the same size as mine, but it has a normal aerofoil not the diamond shape and it is very expensive too.

There are couple of videos for it flying and it did look very stable and easy to handle.

For the orientation problem I'll have the coloured bottom.

Whoops. The only F117 model I ever saw fly was the old AD Ducted fan version!! Which was a lot smaller.. it flew very well. I did not realise they built a 1/8 version..

Same more work,

I've designed the wing mounting system, The wing will have 2 x 12mm carbon fibre tubes permanently fixed into it.

To mount the wing the 2 tubes will go into the side of the fuselage into 3D printed mounts fixed to the formers

Then 3x 4mm bolts will tighten the mount around the tube.

What material do you plan to print those mounts from?

I saw Bob Fiorenze fly the twin OS .91 powered Yellow Aircraft F-117 at Jets over Deland years ago. Still to this day nothing has compared to how that thing looked in the air. It stole the show! I don't think Yellow ever actually introduced it. Again another missed opportunity by a great company. Wonder what ever happened to the molds? It was a decent size best I can remember. Deland...How many of you guys remember that?

Hi Thomas

I'll print the mounts from APS as it is very strong. I did print a lot of parts like servo mounts and engine mounts and the are very strong and the glue hold to them very well.

Ah ok, thats what i thought when google came up empty. It may be just me, but im not sure i would trust ABS plastic to hold the wings on, ive been having problems with that stuff breaking during the print process

Ah really, I had no issues with it at all. The other option is PLA, it is a bit more fixable than ABS but still strong.

I think I'll print one of each and test them.

Hi All

Some more work done over the weekend.

I'm still working on one wing to sort out everything before I start on the second one.

I'm very happy with the result till now, I did sheet one side of the wing and it is very nice. I think the final weight of the wing wing will be around 750g.

My goal is 17kg dry weight, with around 10kg equipments (engines, pipes, electronics, etc...) I've to build the plane to be max of 7kg.

The pics will show the work I've done better than words.

any ideas or thoughts are very welcome.

Cheers

I think Yellow uses ABS for wing hold down on the F-16. But on a larger scale model you are right, I'd go for Aluminum.

Hi all

Some more work done over the week end.

I finished the wing tip, the sanding and glassing of the wing. I it is my first time to use Eze-Kote and I love it...
It is very easy to apply, not sticky, water based, dry fast and so easy to sand.
I didn't do the final coat yet which should give me the final smooth surface ready for priamer and painting.

I'll apply the final coat after I attach the elevon to the wing, as you can see in the pics I've used CA hinges strips. I've glued them before I put the top skin of the wing and I'll do the same with the elevon.

The last picture is for some of the gear that we are collecting for the F117.

I hope the next wing will take much less time than the first one, I want to start in the fuselage .............

Hello everyone

It has been long time since my last post, Busy with life and work.

I did get some work done. both wings are finished and ready to be primed.

I've build a new building table so I can work on the fuselage on 100% flat and level surface.
Hopefully I'll start working on the fuselage next weekend. I did a lot of brain storming and thinking ahead of all the issues I could face during the fuselage building, so I'm ready for it.

Wish me luck guys.
