Default Pilot 71" Dolphin Build and Flight Review

Well guys, it is on its way to me. Shipped from Pilot yesterday. Here are some pictures that Tony sent me from the factory. Some cool new features for the little guy, it will have all electric gear and brakes! This will be awesome as a space saver and reliability. More info to come! I will be including build videos on this thread as well as my photos and comments like the last build, and all that will be followed with another flight video... This time without typos!

How long until the small version will be available to order?

At this point I don't know. The big issue will be with what's going on out on the west coast with all the freight sitting around. I'm sure Chief would have a better idea of when they will get theirs. Tony has only made a couple of them so far, this one is for me to get the build and flight review out, so people will know how the jet builds and flies. I can ask Tony tonight when production versions should be ready. The Chinese new year is fast approaching and there will be no shipping out of China for almost two weeks anyway.

I figured probably after Chinese new years. What turbine are you planning on using? I have a Super bee II that's sitting on the shelf in need of a new home, I figured this would probably be a good option for a simple grass field jet I could use with that engine.

I have not decided on the Turbine yet. I want to get the plane and see how big it is before deciding. Since your in OKC you should come up to Tulsa for the test flights and check it out.

UPDATE: Our Airplane got hung up in customs in China... It didn't make it out before the New Year. We are currently moving to a bigger shop, so it actually worked out okay for us. Once I receive it the build will take front and center and the tread will be updated daily.

I received my prototype today and the build will start Wednesday, so stay tuned for videos and pics along with a full build log like last time!

Ok guys, the shop is overflowing with Jet builds this time of year. So I'm going to do the build, take pics as I go, and then shoot a video of the finished plane, with commentary on how the build went. I just don't have the time to do a step by step like last time. I'll focus on the main points with the build. This is a prototype version so some things will be different by the time it comes to production. So keep that in mind. I will have to do a few flight test as we are still working out the best CG for the plane. I should have the completed review up soon. After the delay in Customs for three weeks other jobs came in and this one has to be worked in between customer builds.

Got the plane unboxed today in between glue drying and paint drying on some other jobs. Here are some pics from that. Quality is the same as on any Pilot model, excellent. Initial fit and finish looks good. A few changes I noticed right off the bat from the big one is where things have been lightened to keep the weight down, such as the tail area. On the big one the tail was almost a solid block of balsa where the horizontal mounts. On this one it is just skeleton built. Also the vertical mount on the fuse is not as deep for the glue joint, but there are carbon pins that go down into the fuse for alignment. Other than that it looks almost the same. I will have more in a few days as I get time to put the turbine system in and glue the vertical on. Oh, almost forgot.... All electric gear and brakes! I have the prototype controller but they look great, and strong.

Man, she looks really nice...I noticed that the 71" version is not on Chief's website yet. Probably available summer I would imagine?

It won't be until me and one other guy get all the balance and throws and such worked out on the two prototypes. Then Tony will put them in production and Chief will have them. I will have this one at Joe Nall and Kentucky Jets.

Okay guys, We are sorting through some prototype issues and working them out, this is all part of the process with new planes. You can not just shrink jets down and expect them to work, so we are working with Tony to sort some things out. Once we get everything okay I will post up some video and build pics. This has been a long process and time consuming, but the outcome should be good for all of you that are interested in a 6KG air frame at a reasonable price. I will update the Thread as soon as I have more information for you guys. Thanks, J

Yes, we are about to test the fourth generation of it. We are getting it perfect before releasing it or doing the production version review.

Well I will assume that this smaller version is a total failure. No more posts after a year, what else should we think. Does anyone else have any information on why this thread stopped?

Wasn't a popular model, with my tail mods it was OK, but still not what it could have been. I think there was another thread though.

Hello to all,

I hate to say anything bad so I usually don't say anything at all.

I have been working on this 71" jet all winter and I can say with confidence that there are headaches with this model. I have experienced a list of concern items on this model. Finished, it will be a little under powered with 60N turbine as the take off weight will be 20-21 pounds plus.
