Sadly I have not tried the slats or the airbrake yet...so I'm just carrying around a few extra ounces of dead weight.

If you do the F22 please start a thread and post some pics, I'm thinking the F22 will be my next project. Tom

FW T45 with K30 UPDATE: I got a couple more flights on my T45 this past weekend, that brings the total flights to 27. After flight # 21 I notice a little fuel dripping from the below the tank, a thorough inspection revealed that the fuel stopper gasket was leaking. When I removed the wing to clean up the fuel leak I inspected the area around the turbine and was pleased to note that there was absolutely no indication of any heat damage to the surrounding foam structure, I'm only using a single wall exhaust tube and aluminum tape to mitigate the heat and it's working perfectly. The landing gear are holding up nicely, but I only operate from a paved runway and I have not had any harsh landings yet, so I'm not sure how it would hold up operating from grass. I have not needed to deploy the airbrakes or slats on landing yet, she slows down quite nicely with just full flaps. The K30 definitely does not overpower this aircraft, I find myself flying at full throttle most of the time. Compared to my other jets, this jet bleeds lot more energy in the turns and requires conscious effort to keep it from stalling, but it's still a joy to fly. -Tom

Wonder how the new KT 45 G3 would be. It’s the same weight and size as the 30

The T45 is a quite heavy airplane. I did not find it comfortable flying it slower than ~65mph without flaps. K45G3 for sure more oumpf, but it uses more fuel too... shorter flights.

Now I'm flying the Avios Mig-17 and its awesome!! Can not compare to the T45 in any way more than both got the fancy air brake... haha... The Mig17 is like playing with a kitten while the T45 was more like a cobra LOL

I'll make a thread for it a day when it rains... which probably will be tomorrow as my Eflite C-27 Spartan is ready for maiden...

Yes, the T45 is a little on the heavy side, however, it still flies and lands very nicely. You do, however, have to respect its limitations This is not a jet that you cut power and swing around for one of the low turns to final with a touch down as you roll wings level. When this one wears out or meets its end I would definitely consider getting another one.

The Mig looks really cool!

Are you using a Soloshot3? If so, what settings are you using? I've not had good luck with mine being able to track my jets. -Tom

Yes, SS3 and no it does not work very well. You need to be lucky and do long sweeping passes such as the landing. SS does not seem to be in business any more, no FW updates for a year.

Henke,
I've got a spare K30 laying around looking for a home, do you think it would work in the Avios Mig-17? If so, does SAB sell a turbine retrofit kit like the T45 kit? Thanks, Tom

I need the bolt pattern of the K30 to make the kit. For Kolibri and X45 it's already available. Really great plane.

Can I help with the bolt pattern? I would definitely buy one of your conversion kits if you can design one for the K30 -Tom

Sure, would need the spacing of the holes just like Gaspar have for the X45

Two flights so far on a K45G3 converted T45. Flew very nice off grass. Issue I'm having is gear won't retract in flight. Pulled gear as soon as it broke ground. Log shows receiver voltage sagged to 4.7 volt and then gear hung. Work great on the ground of course. Is everyone flying with all the door and has anyone had a problem. These are the gen one retracts which may be the issue.

I’ve got 30 flights on mine with a K30, no retract issues so far. The first 12 flights were with all the doors, I ended up removing the servo activated portion of the doors because they would not close all the way, which resulted in a very annoying hissing sound in flight. One note is that I fly off paved runway, not grass. At close to 10lbs I wish I had a little more thrust, but she flies fairly well with the K30.

Thanks for the quick response. Are yours the Gen 1 or 2 retracts. The gen 1s have a rounded top to the motor housing and the gen 2s have a flat top. Just curious if there is a difference in the gearing or something. On the first flight I tried three or four times to get the gear up and ended up with the right main at 45 degrees for landing but luckily it was a soft landing and no damage.

Not sure if mine are GEN 1 or GEN 2, here is a picture, does this work for determining whether they are GEN1 or GEN2:

Okay, after re-reading your post, my motor housing is flat, which indicates they are GEN 2? -Tom

Thanks Tom, yes gen. 2. Know they are stronger but will have to ask Motion if it is a worthwhile upgrade. Will play with it some more. Only got two flights and first one was slightly tail heavy which had some very bad flight characteristics. Second flight, with another 2 ounces of nose weight, was much better but hard to focus on gear other then at least one of them were down.

I notice your gear strut doors are missing, is that by choice? Also are you using the inner main doors?

One last question. On this conversion I used the original 8amp BEC. Has anyone had a problem with these. Can't find any failure in a Google search.

I removed part of the strut gear doors and the inner doors because I’m using wheels with electric brakes, which did not allow the gear doors to fully close, which caused an annoying hissing sound in flight.

I only needed 1/2 oz of lead total in the nose for balance, what is your all up weight (full of fuel)?

I’m using a 20 AMP Castle BEC, not the OEM BEC.

I have many flights on the edf version and have had problems getting the gear to retract every time if going very fast. I removed all doors and that helped some. I even replaced all the gear and still have the problem now and then. The gear motors are very weak and if the air causes them to stall they will not retract.
