Introducing the RDT - FRSKY Taranis Telemetry for Jets
Hello guys,
Are there any pilots out there running FRSKY Taranis radios with their jets?
while being a low price radio, it is extremely popular among the racing quad pilots, and they really beat on their radios much harder than jet pilots do.
the FRSKY radio link quality has also been proven well in FPV enviroments which are quite harsh on the radio link.
I myself fly a Futaba 18MZ on all my jets, and i love it! but i do use the Taranis with all of my non-Jet models with perfect results.
i know several pilots that use the Taranis with good results in Jets, and im not going to start a flame war about the use of the radio itself, im just curious if there is a requirement for Taranis telemetry units such as this RDT unit i just made for a friend:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnVcn0e1cB8 The RDT is extremely lightweight (<7g) and is completely plug and play.
so far i have made these units for Xicoy V6, Xicoy V10 and Jetcat (Jetronics) ECUs.
Would love to hear the word from FRSKY Taranis pilots.
thanks.

I am very interested in what you have here. I currently fly my Xcalibur with a Kingtech K100G (Xicoy 10 ECU) with Spektrum equipment. I am seriously considering switching my radio gear to FrSky. I use the Taranis / Horus on OpenTX in some of my other models and am really impressed with what they have to offer. It doesn't look like Gaspar wants to support the FrSky telemetry due to little demand, so my next step would be to build something myself. Do you have any plans to market your module? If not, would you be willing to help a fellow out in how to build one? The electronics portion would not be a problem for me, but programming and protocol isn't exactly my strong suit lol. Outstanding work by the way!

I am very interested. I have installed my Taranis in a Top Gun F-15 but haven't flown it yet. Please quote price and delivery to Denver, CO. USA.
I have flown the Taranis for approx 3 years with complete success. It has had a couple of minor mechanical problems which I was easily able to repair. I recently ground range checked the X8R receiver at .91 miles, couldn't go any further at the location I was checking at. I am using the N2 airspeed sensor with excellent results.

Flying jets with Taranis, no problems so far, very robust link. I understand that this module can be connected like one more sensor? ( I mean you can use combined with more smart port sensors?

RDT can now be purchased at:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/ite...cussion_anchor
RDT can be connected in parallel to other sensors - we tested it paralleled to FRSKY CELLS sensor - works perfectly.

This is a rookie question but can the FrSky transmitters be set up to use the Futaba FAAST protocol?
I assume the native FrSky transmitters and receivers are using a different protocol not compatible with Futaba. I've got several FrSky FAAST compatible receivers I use in some of my airplanes, so I know FrSky makes FAAST compatable equipment, just not sure of that applies to TX equipment. I'm curious.
I'm in one of those situations where I have many higher end Futaba receivers so I hate to start over again. I don't have a problem learning new programming, that's never been an issue. But, this is a big one, I am so confident in the FAAST protocol I hate to leave it and can not see myself considering going to JR or Spektrum ever. Perhaps Jeti or FrSky...
I'd like to have quality telemetry systems working and as of now I have no telemetry. I'm not desperate for it but I know once I get it I'll never want to be without, especially on fuel quantity used, etc. I don't really care about my transmitter telling me where my flaps are or what mode I'm flying in (nor do I want that). On the other hand fuel state for jets and battery state for electrics (both flight packs and receiver pack info) and radio link warnings if necessary would be extremely useful.

Correct, their protocol is not futaba. It is frequency hopping which is similar but not the same as futaba. If there was a JR style module that did faast you could use that but there is not. There are some adapters but they only work with the lower channel capable modules...
