Saw this while cruising some YouTube videos, an interview with the CIA museum cureator on NBC. The shot at about 3:02 in gave me chills!

The surviving M-21 is in Boeing's Museum of Flight in Seattle and has a D-21 mounted.

Lockheed M-21 Blackbird | The Museum of Flight

Lockheed D-21B Drone | The Museum of Flight

I took a F-105G to the boneyard in 1980 and they gave us the nickel tour. We drove by about a dozen D-21's laying on pallets, some silver, some black, but they pointedly didn't say anything about them. Probably all gone to who knows where now.

I didn't know it at the time, but Mele Vojvodich, my Wing Commander at Korat RTAFB, had been on loan to the CIA and flew the A-12. He ejected right after takeoff in an A-12 due to the rate gyros being connected backwards.

How is that even possible?!! Wow! I guess its hard to pick the airplane up and move it around its axis' and make sure your "demon cortex" is working properly!

Darn it Oli.....

Can we get an opening canopy? And does it come painted like that?!

Does anyone know the reasoning for the different chines on the SR-71's? I have tried finding out which air frames had it and others did not and the reasoning for it, but never have been able to.

I think the one on the bottom has a side looking radar on the nose, as opposed to the OBC.

The SR had interchangeable nose sections with different sensors depending on the mission requirements. There were several different nose sections that could be fitted. Each had a different shape. The round one used on the A-12 with the interceptor radar is really cool and different looking.

That was not fitted onto the A-12. The YF-12 (intercepter version with radar) was a different airplane, a little longer and had additional strakes on the engine nacelles for additional stability. A-12 was purely an overflight recon airplane.

Yes, I am working on the operating canopy, along with the scale cockpit and chute.

Yes the M-21 does come painted like this. Including the sanded panels.
However the markings differ on the SR, so they are optional ( some are significantly more complex to paint than others ).

This is one of our SR-71 flying in Danemark. Pilot Nikolai Kaaber.
The plane is 20 kgs dry/ 25 kgs wet and powered by two B-140F engines, Futaba radio and powerbox system.
No gyro for the time being, which shows on the still roll oscillation after takeoff.

This flies exactly like my A-12. I still have to find a camera operator to shoot one of my flights!

Congratulations to Nikolai and his team!
