Default Aviation Design / Avonds F16

I have just acquired a 2nd hand F16 which was advertised as an Aviation Design F16 but now not too sure as it certainly has some Avonds F16 detailed additions..... not bothered as to which kit it is as they are both great models just want to be sure so does anyone know any differences in the models so I can definitively know which one it is.

I once saw an Aviation Design F-16 that had "Aviation Design" inscribed on some of the wooden components inside the airframe.

If the wings are balsa sheeted foam its an Avonds, if the wings are composite it's an AD. Also the Avonds engine hatch is way bigger than the AD.

That must have been some trainer that could midair a jet. Usually the faster plane hits the slower one. What was you spotter doing?

Those trainers should learn to stay on the ground while the big boys are flying!

That's supposed to be sarcasm, if it's not obvious enough.

Really? Why are the hatches so different I wonder. Wouldn't they be the same if it were the same mold? I honestly don't know becaise I've never built a mold, just asking.

I suspect it's possible or even more likely that the hatch is cut after the upper fuselage is taken from the mold - but I've also never built one, so that's a wild ass guess!

My Avonds hatch was clearly molded in and not cutout. I'm not saying the two jets aren't both 1/6.8 scale, I just don't know how they could be from the same mold.

The Avonds is a much lighter airframe (was made for turbine or IC Ducted Fan) due to the foam and balsa sheeted flying surfaces, but the AD has all the panel lines and more detail molded into them. Both great jets, just made a little different.

Well I was flying correct pattern and the trainer quickly took off downwind and turned straight into me nose to nose. He was waiting until he wasn't. All happened so fast my spotter and I were dumbfounded

Nope, absolutely not. I made the plug of the AD F-16. These are different products.
However some scale parts made by Philip could fit our F-16...

Thanks for the comments guys... the fuselage does feel relatively heavy as the original owner has reinforced considerably. ..... and the scale additions look to definitely be Avonds and I will certainly add more..... I think the tailplane control could be the definitive decider so I will try to post a pic tomorrow.

Pics? I have an AD sitting here and could probably tell you.

Oli: What ever happened to AD producing this plane again? They told me the mold was worn out and time to make a new one... Do you have any plans on making another mold?

If I remember correctly the AD was kind of a rough scale. The exhaust looked like a cigar, it had the turkey feathers modeled in the open position.

from what I remember reading the AD was actually the most scale f16 outline of any of them. I have an AD but no idea about the avonds.

Hard to tell because Avonds had all the scale upgrades you could think of to make it a scale masterpiece. I also remember reading that Top Gun models had the finest F-16 as well, I think it was the first "big one".

The Avonds canopy/hatch is one piece of clear plastic and the builder has to paint it to match rest of jet. If the canopy/hatch is 1 piece of plastic you have an Avonds

I always wondered if tog gun models actually existed not the one that made the small jets like the mig29 and top cat but I remember ads for top gun models that showed a huge F14 as well that I don't think ever came to be.

as for jets that were the same, wasnt the spider jets F16 the same as the Avonds?

It was the same company that made the DF Mig and F-15. They sold the plugs and a couple of F-16s here on RCU about a decade ago. There was a guy in this forum that was close friends with the owner and could get us TGA parts. Ahh GhostRider!!

ok. I was under the impression that TGA stuff was more sport scale.
I'm sure there was another one called top gun though. I remember the ad specifically for a large F14 and it read big boys toys. Wonder who that was now.....
