What is the lead time from ordering the kit until it is shipped?
What all is included in the short kit, what other wood is required?
Are the fixturing boards included?

Delivery time for USA is about 2 - 3 weeks, depend of post service.
In wooden kit you will get all ply ribs for fuselage, wings, elevators... Balsa for skin isn't included.
Building templates are parts of the kit.

Tomorrow, January 7. "Mirce models" give 10% discount on all wooden kits!!!!!

My second "NEXT" model...

The first was a prototype made for Damiano, and with it he has made more than a few hundred flights so far.

This second model I started more than a year a half ago, meanwhile making a few F 100 and F 86 and finally it was time to finish “NEXT”.

A little reminder of how it was at the beginning. Fuselage...

This is very interesting.
I was reading the web page for it and the F100. They state to put all the pieces together then apply glue. Makes sense. But they recommend wood glue, which really does not penetrate joints like CA glue. I wonder how it is glued?

Yes, I always use wood glue. Wood glue connection is much stronger than CA joints.

I suggest that part of the model, for example the wings, be assembled without glue, in order to see the work process.
Then everything is disassembled and piece by piece is glued together !!!
Under no circumstances should already assembled parts be glued, because in that case the wood glue does not penetrate between the joints.

A couple of pictures from the making of the wings.

As you already know, this model is completely made in 3D and the parts are cut on a laser cut machine.
It is interesting to note that this, as well as all "Mirce models" wooden kits, have templates in which the wing ribs are placed.
Production is fast and precise.
We use G 10 parts for flap hinges with offset displacement, which allows ventilation when the flaps are in the lowered position. Horns are from G10 material also.
This parts are available on "Mirce models" web site and can fit on every big jet or warbird model - Galeb G2 - hinges & horns from G10 material - nsmodelers.rs
The recommended retracts are Electrons E 40 and the template that comes with the model allows easy positioning of the opening.

The most recognizable part on the "NEXT" model are the air intakes for turbine.
This is a unique shape and you will not find a similar one on any acrobatic jet model. Damiano once told me that he got the idea by looking at Ferrari cars. Whatever it is, they look phenomenal and give a special flair to this model.
So, today canopy & air intakes...

I've heard balsa is hard to get and is getting expensive. How many sheets of 1/8" balsa are needed for this model?
I sure would like one, but it takes me 3-months to build an ARF. I'd end up working on this for two years or more.

At $5/sheet you can double the kit costs.
That's Balsa USA prices.

Mirce told me 35 100x1000x3 and 2 25x100x1000. I'll use 1/8

It appears cheaper to buy (47) sheets of 1/8" x 3" x 48" than (35) sheets of 1/8" x 4" x 48". The (47) 3"s will cover the same area as (35) 4"s.

The wider the wood, the bigger the tree has to be. Makes sense 3" would be cheaper than 4". Yea 4" would be less strips but not worth the extra cost as balsa is getting more rare to buy and more expensive. Balsa is so easy to work with so why not get the cheaper option. There's something special when building with wood and it all comes together despite the challenges.

I made two "NEXT" models and I know exactly that it needs 33 balsa boards 100x1000x3 mm and 2 boards 100x1000x10 mm.
You can also buy another dimension of 3 mm balsa boards, because thin moldings are definitely used on large surfaces of the model (cabin for example).

And one more thing, this is not a small model, the fuselage is 102" long, and when you compare the price of a wooden kit and match everything else to it, "NEXT" is still at least 3 times cheaper than a similar composite one.
And certainly not worse !!!!!

And now the best news, the price of a wooden kit is reduced by 20% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I decided to build the NEXT for several reasons.
1 It's different.
2. I build it and don't have to worry about poor material or poor craftsmanship. I'm tired of paying several thousand for an ARF that requires many hours of reengineering. I knew what the cost would be and I know what the quality will be when finished.
3. It flies well.
4. Building with balsa is real modelling, a lost art.

Got my NEXT 3 weeks after ordering it. Nicely packed with no shipping damage. Looks like a termite smorgasbord. Everything neatly packed in labeled bags. Got a couple of repair projects to complete before starting it and will begin a build thread when I do.
