Default Me163 Air-Classics 1/4

I found this very well done kit from Air-Classics, German small manufacturer, and started the build recently which should be relatively quick to the simplicity of the model. Scale 1/4, meant to support up to 14 Kgs thrust turbojet and using scale flaps, speed-brakes. I’m in direct contact with Andy from Air-Classics who is suppose to send me throw values (I don’t want to discover them by myself, not much room for mistakes here).

Anyone else building this fast egg ?

Great looking bird, nice to see something out of the ordinary. Looking forward to the rest of the build and some flight video.

Cheers

Please post flight videos.

I have a Joe Siatta 82" Me-163. It always generates a lot of interest when I bring it out. Also it's my favorite plane to fly, very stable and no bad habits.

Initially my Me-163 was 11 - 12# dry. I didn't like his flimsey wings, so I built new ones, fully sheeted with flaps, added a smoke system and nose weight to balance. After all that it was about 15# dry.

You can see my build photos at Anyone have a Turbine ME-163 on this site? I got some questions

Since this model has a detachable under carriage, does that exempt it from the AMA requirement for brakes?

This has been debated in a number of forums. The concensus is that it's a glider (or at least lands like a glider) and is exempt.

Thanks
It appears to have a servo controlled rudder and therefore should be AMA turbine approved.
Looks like a nice model

I don’t use it, but if you search there seems to be a Bookface page for them with the 163

As per Item #6 in AMA 510, there is no question or debates that it is exempt from needing to meet requirements for a controlled stop at idle.

6. For RC fixed wing aircraft: With the exception of hand-launched aircraft which have no undercarriage and with a flight weight under 7.5 pounds wet, the model shall be able to come to a controlled stop on command with the engine at idle on a level hard surface.

If you search that entire document there is no mention of "brakes", only that the model must come to a commanded stop at idle, how that is achieved is totally up to the modler.
This requirement is also exempt for aircraft under 7.5 Lbs wet.

Item 10 exempts the rudder for aircraft under 7.5 Lbs wet, unfortunately this one most likely would not meet that exemption.

10. With the exception of hand-launched aircraft, with a flight weight under 7.5 pounds wet, controllable rudders are required on all RC aircraft.

Well if we're picking hairs rule 6 says aircraft with no undercarriage AND under 7.5 lbs wet, not OR. So by weighing more than 7.5 lbs, it is not exempt regardless of the undercarriage situation. But sliding on its belly at idle it's not going far and is going to come to a stop, so while not exempt I would argue that it is still within the regs.
