Default Smoke installations on Turbo Props

Hi Everyone

Building a Turbo Raven with King Tech 100 TP and was curious how you guys have performed your smoke installations, primarily the nozzle side and where to position the introduction of the smoke nozzle.

Thanks
SatDave

Hi SatDave,

This is how I did the installation on my CARF Tucano. Basically a Y-connection in the oil feed from the pump to a tube in each exhaust outlet. This tubing enters the exhaust and continues in a tubular coil inside the pipe towards the exit. Then returns back towards the turbine and ends at the start of the exhaust extention in a flattened and curled spray exit. This way the oil gets heated up before it is sprayed into the exhaust pipe. Works like an absolute charm.

I use a non-flamable agricultural spray oil. It is clear and water soluble. No coloured residue, only clear easy to wipe-off.

Check out Bad Dog Smokes. I haven't gotten mine installed yet, but, looks like a very clean install.

+1 for bad dog smokes.

Springbok’s coil set up is great - I just sprayed into the exhaust tube and only got about 75% burn. Lots of goo on the top of the wing and on the horizontal stab.

A word of caution, I did a mix so the smoke pump would not come on unless the throttle was at least 25% or higher. A friend lost his Tucano as he didn’t use this mix and too much smoke oil at idle caused a flame out and he was unable to recover.

Yes Paul, very good advice. I also use a setup whereby the smoke pump only operates above 1/4 throttle for the same reason as you mentioned. Very easy to spray oil into the turbine and kill the flame at idle. Anyway, flying a turbo prop, one very quickly learn that the prop bite is rather unpredictable below 1/4 throttle anyway and flying with positive response requires some throttle most of the time.

Good point, I should have mention at low idle I use only like 30% or less of the capability of the pump....and at max throttle I only put 100% on plane with the smoke tube exit at the back of the jet....I used only KingTech, Powerbox and holy smoke pump and put out a lot of smoke at full blast.
