Default The Shepherd.

A truly wonderful Christmas ghost story involving a disabled Vampire trying to land at night in a fog bound East Anglia on Christmas eve.
Written by Frederick Forsyth, who flew Vampires in the RAF, it was described in last month’ Flypast magazine as the greatest story in aviation.
The twist at the end is just brilliant and spine chilling, yet heart warming !
Its a short book, can be read in under two hours !
I will be reading it again on Christmas eve, and remembering my days on the Vampire 60 years ago.
Disney have just released a film version starring John Travolta, a very committed aviator.
The book is on Amazon in UK for under 10 pounds !

Hello David,

Thank you for the excited introduction to the book!
I was in East Anglia in 1978 until 1983. We called it RAF Bentwaters, and its sister base just the other side of Ike, Woodbridge.
Book Ordered....
Cheers!

Hello David,
The flying vampire in the film is provided by The Norwegian Historical Squadron which I was a part of for 10 years. Logged nearly 250 hours in that aircraft (LN-DHY) from 2009 onwards.

Regards,

Per

Hi Per,
Yes I read that and the Mosquito was that being stored, engines running, in Lincolnshire next to the Just Jane Lanc. December’s Flypast magazine has an excellent article on the making of the film.

I never flew the single seater, just the T11 ( with its incredibly cramped cockpit) on my advanced training, in fact, checking my log book, I was flying a T11 60 years ago today, instrument rating test, dates me !
I nave not yet seen the full film, just the trailer. The torching of the night start on the Goblin brought back a few memories of my own night sorties.
Happy Christmas,
kind regards,
David

Just watched the film with my wife who really enjoyed it,too.
I actually felt quite emotional, brought back so many memories of the Vampire and life in the RAF in the early 60 s.
Same uniforms, and flying kit, same style officer,s mess and the torching start of the Goblin !
I soon be watching it again with my grandsons, Tom seen here in a Mosquito at the Salisbury Hall museum, and James by a Vampire I have flown, now preserved at the wonderful Newark Air Museum.
Its a great short film for the Christmas season, enjoy !
Happy Christmas !
