RE: Century Jet F-105
I will take some pics as I go but I am a slow builder so it will take some time. Looking forward to getting into it. Keep you posted.

RE: Century Jet F-105
I figured out how to do the gear!!!! With Larry Wolf's help of course. Now I have to build the parts........ It will fly again soon!
I bought the SKS video of 2001 Superman. This thud looked like a real handfull! Yikes!

RE: Century Jet F-105
Nice to see this thread re-started. There was a 105 built and flown here in the UK in the late nineties with a Viojet combo that I believe was later converted to turbine. I have personally built a CJM Mig 15 that was grossly under powered as a DF model but became the sweetest flyer when I fitted a Wren ss. Lots of luck with the build, Ron

I have one on order. If you don't mind, share with me what you guys figured out on the gear. I would like to get them working with the doors as well. I would be willing to pay you for an extra set of the required parts if you work it out.

RE: Century Jet F-105
So there are a few of these things out there!
I took some pics of the problem with the gear doors. There may be a better idea than what I will do. I am also wondering if what I have for the gear is the stock set up? First pic is with the doors aligned with the airflow and the front of the plane. Second pic is with the gear retracted. Third is what the doors look like when they come back out. The leading edge is pointing outward toward the wing tip about 25 deg.

RE: Century Jet F-105
I was engineering a very complicated device similar to a stretching u-joint. But this was Larry Wolf's idea after just a couple seconds looking at the plane. Sometimes it really helps to have someone else look. It is very simple and it does work on the bench. This pic is of a quick mock up useing thread to pull the front edge back to the alinged position. When retracted it is limp in the wheel well. But will it work in flight??????

RE: Century Jet F-105
I see someone else is working on this kit too! There may only be a few with this kit, but it does look nice. I have completed a major milestone, The gear and doors all work great now![X(][X(][X(]!
Dan already had the nose gear doors working well. It was the mains that were the trouble. The gear strut does not rotate, but the strut door must. I made the main door attachment points rotate when the door goes up, and a kevlar line pulls the door aligned with the airflow against a stop when extended. BVM's smallest cylinders work the inner doors. And a UP-3 valve actuates them all. The P-60 is mounted now too. It will be done before the end of this year! Ha! yes I do work slow. That's why my models must last a long time. I am planning on a T.O. weight of just under 18 pounds.

RE: Century Jet F-105
I have done the doors on a 105 for a friend before and what I did was mount a flat hinge to the gear door at the top and where the door meets the retract cover I used a screw in the middle of the hinge to allow it to pivot forward as the gear went up.The gear door brackets I opened them up a little to allow them to slide up and down on the strut and the hinge on the gear door had a stop point to prevent the door from rotating too far backward causing the doors to point inward or outward. When you are ready to fly it give me a pm and I can give you some pointers on the CG and what to be ready for the airplane that flew at superman2001 was a little tailheavy I made a change on mine where the CG is and I flew it on EDF to cure the problems that airplane had before I install a turbine in it. Its ready for the engine now I plan on that this winter its still jet season

Yes I am very nervous about the CG. The Superman video has me spooked. I have most of the radio and pushrods in. Then the turbine components will go in next.
This is just a worthless little tinkertoy to most in the jet community. And I hesitate to share anymore about it here or any jet meet. I will PM. Thank you.

I'm glad you got the doors right. If Larry couldn't figure it out, nobody could. Don't let the Superman 2001 flight spook you, it was the maiden and there were two things wrong. The stab wasn't centered properly so we ran out of up trim and had to hold 1/4 up stick to get it to fly level and the CG was way too far forward, that's why the landing was so hot and it wouldn't flair. I don't know if it was the CG used for the static balance or the way the fuel load was situated in the plane, all I know is it wasn't right. Since I moved away from a suitable flying site soon after the maiden, I never got that one figured out. One person that really knows how that airplane needs to be balanced is Lewis Patton. At the time of the first flight he had recently severed ties with CJM, things were still really raw and he was not interested in anything having to do with one of their planes. You might want to try contacting him, he's a really nice guy and has a feel for R/C planes like few others. He goes by jeteye here on RCU. If you have any other questions e-mail me, I'll do my best to answer them.

You did a fantastic job building and painting this bird. My hat is off to you!!!!! When I got it, the inside was completely hollow? No mounts for anything. Talk about taking everything but the kitchen sink! are there any photos for 63-293? I have searched the world and found nothing.

RE: Century Jet F-105
For those who care- I have all the controls in now. It is now a Thud GLIDER!(with retracts). The gear doors are still working great after many many cycles. My first time using an Ultra Precision valve, outstanding! I still need to make sense of all the spagetti wiring.
I have a line open with CJM for drop tanks. If this bird survives the test flights I would like try competing with it (with a new paint job). I'll have to pull my CJM F-105D kit out to see if there is any info on control throws and CG positions.

RE: Century Jet F-105
Getting closer! All the stuff in the tail is ready. I am determined to have a neat installation. P-60 is mounted. The rudder servo and pushrods are all inside. The elevator controls are pretty strong. With most equipment inside it weighs 15.5 pounds. Still not sure of the C.G. I do think it will be close. I am planning on bringing it to the OEAF meet next month.

RE: Century Jet F-105
Yes, my empty weight will be just a hair over 16 pounds. Just the turbine fuel, propane, and ECU components left to do then I can run it and taxi it. All the fuel will be ahead of the CG. Oh and the brake set up too. I usualy do that last.
I am going to use for my main tank, a tank from a Boomerang mounted upside down.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet... But you might want to change the horns to metal ones.. I had a friend that lost his jet for the same reason plastic horns next to the turbine....
Jet looks good cant wait to hear about the test flights...
