Hi Alan

Thanks for your reply to my post about the lower rear of the fuselage. I had no intention of removing the rearmost plate - however I did note that the forward end of it did not reach the former, and was just 'hanging in mid air'. I've extended it and filled in the cut-out portion as well (but have removed the wing bolt/nut mount, which wasn't well secured) - please see the photo I attached to the thread after my initial post.

Now that I've epoxied the fuselage to the wing, the whole thing seems very solid.

Cheers

David

... Hmmm ..... Didnt the plate you removed have a balsa back to it which sat/was then epoxied onto the top rear surface of the wing... this was a pretty large contact area of wing to fuse to remove.

That's the one Dave, but then I have added area and strength by joining the rear plate to the former and filling in the cut out. There is a good 20 mm glued to the wing trailing edge.

I could add the equivalent joining surface area to wing and former at the former under the starter motor in the form of a gusset - I was thinking about adding some anyway along the inside fuselage sides.

That having been said, I can't see the joint between the wing and fuselage letting go as it is, and I did use slow setting epoxy for maximum strength.

At present having fun with a UPS 5 spring air valve - despite it being properly lubricated it isn't keen on being moved. I had hoped to use a micro servo to shift it, but that had nowhere near enough torque. A standard Futaba servo shifts it, but I think it may stall from time to time, which would not be good. I might resort to using a high torque servo, and try different types of grease until I get it right.

Cheers, David

But Dave, I've just spent £35 on the UP5. D'oh!

That seems to be a bit of an old fashioned look from your son(?) - my son is my official fireman, but was very disappointed that I didn't set fire to anything during bench testing. He's itching to set the CO2 extinguisher off

Cheers

Go on, Admit it it.. we've all done it at some point ....something real stupid...something you know should'nt have happened BUT for reasons that your still finding excuses for , it did.

I know there's a couple of characters out here who want to know how i managed to " Roast the rump "......" burn the arse end off " (or whatever delightfull phrase they can come up with....) of the AV8R .

Here Goes ....it was dead easy realy !

New in line fuel filter fitted ...and a bit of re plumbing of the pipework to suit ....so i thought a quick run up of the turbine was in order ....Rats... on board gas tank regestering less than 1/2 a Bar ...better top the little chap up.... double rats..[:@].... top up tank nearly empty too... ah well, up end the thing & see what we can drain out of it ...

Phone rings...whiz indoors ....no we dont want any more double Glazing.. clear off.

Back outside ...time is slipping by now...best hurry up.. switch on, all systems go , three attempted starts, but no go then on the fourth attempt....holly cow [:-]......all the liquid propane /butane that had got into the turbine from the STILL connected and upended top up tank ignites...Dont panic Mr Mainwaring..[:@] No fire Extinguisher ..... i was'nt going to need it anyway....... Hmmmmn

All is not lost ... the garden watering can is close by....Tripple rats ...its empty ....run indoors .. refill, but by this time the arse end of the AV8R is well alight ....the rest is history now.

So come on we've all got some disaster story to tell i'm sure..!..

Guy

I'm just about to buy the retracts for the Intro. I was planning to buy SA 101 HD's.

Should I consider any others?
who sells them?

Cheers

I nearly had a disaster with my baby boomerang.
I have flown it about 20 times.
On the last flight, I had just landed & I noticed the elevator horn had snapped at its thinnest part.
I cannot believe how lucky I was. It must have happened just as I landed.
The elevator is quite large & the plastic horn is very thin at the point of fracture & I have had a couple of hot starts which may have made the plastic brittle.
As the turbine is blasting hot air in the direction of the horn, I have replaced the stock item with a much more substantial one.

The moral of this story is, check your horn before flying & fit a bigger one in case yours breaks off.

Regards

Jim,
I have sent you a PM requesting a look at the horn if possible. I use these myself trouble free. However..........
I am concerned about as it is the first report of this potential problem . If true that the damage was heat related, I will take action in several ways. Can you send it to me?

Hi Alan,

I was there and actually was the one who noticed it even before it broke and told Jim to replace it. Since I saw that, I have replaced mine as well with a SS one from Sullivan.

Chris

Treadstone, can you let me know where I can get one of those SS Sullivan contol horns please? Although I am happy with the quality of the horns in the kit, this heat issue has me wanting a 'better safe than sorry' arrangement!
My ususal Model supplier hasn't heard of them!

Many thanks

Chris

I put my 6 cell ECU pack right up the front and stuck it with double sided tape (vertical). then i put my 5 cell RX battery infront of it
horizontally. and filled the gaps with foam.

Treadstone - I still havnt managed to weigh the model .

Thanks Volkan.

I hope to run the Wren in the airframe tomorrow, no booms etc.

Even though I'm not having brakes or retracts, I found it a tight install.
