I've under Reacted, just plain Reacted and I even over Reacted!

Dave Rigotti
over Reacted? Is that the new version with the engine on top?

Merry Christmas everyone!

Well beauty is only skin deep...unless you are talking about this kit! Stunning inside and out! I just started working on it a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is this is the best engineered kit out of the dozens and dozens I have built. I love the clean and simple lines, it looks "born to fly".

Can't say I find the Boomerang good looking...but I also can't help but wonder what a "boat-tail" Reaction would look like with a twin boom tail!

You got me thinking as I'm building a reaction for my dad. I bet it would look really good.

Might be worth a bit more thought...but I want to get Reaction number 1 off the bench first!

I have finished the wing panels, without a doubt they have the best strength to weight ratio of any kit I have built.

You must have a white stick if you think the reaction looks good,
Err, thanks jetrichie, from France, right? Where they design cars that look like this? [:'(]

While I wouldn't call the Reaction the world's prettiest model for a trainer there are limited options to avoid using a pipe, high tail, split tail, engine on top or a twin boom layout like the wheelbarrow - oops, sorry, Boomerang.

Besides, being a kit, if you don't like the look of the Reaction you can change it until you do like the look. The Reaction layout is even used by a few full size jets including the Squalus. - John.

(actually, I do like French cars! )

Thanks to everybody who's sticking up for the Reaction. You guys are cracking me up.

Hmmm, a twin-boomer with Reaction styling? Sounds like another project for RCGUY!

Hope you all had a great Christmas, even you jetrichie.

Default RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

I planned on building mine without modifications...I intend to copy the 2nd prototype as I absolutly love the scheme (almost every trim scheme I do is military, time for a change).

I did make one "modification" to the build procedure of the wing. I hate sheeting wings, don't know why it's such a pain but it is for me. Once the square stock leading edge was glued to the ribs I used a razor plane to make the top-side flush with the top surface of the ribs. I trued the edge with a large T-bar sander. Then I applied the sheeting "backwards" starting with glueing the sheeting to the main spar 1st. This allowed me to "pull" and clamp the sheeting on the leading edge. When the glue was dry I trimmed the sheeting even to the leading edge and began the same procedure for the bottom sheeting.

This method allowed me to use the sheeting as a complete "rectangle" without need to pre-trim prior to installation. While this kit builds fast, this did save some time and frustration for me anyway!

Tommy,
Just wondering how the strut modification is going. Have you installed the struts?

I've had great success with the Robart retracts and struts. However, I will try using electric retracts on the next Reaction (my third Reaction but please don't tell jetrichie I think the Reaction is a neat looking jet and a nice kit to build).

Hi Keith,

I have the struts have not installed them yet. I got a new set of retracts so I could go back to the original wire legs if necessary. I had locked the wire legs in place with grub screws and I can't get them out !!. The nose strut needs a steering arm which I will have to make. I use a servo near the retract not the cables as in the kit. I have refurbished the old girl and repainted it and installed new batteries. The weather here has been very hot so I havn't flow it yet.
The nose strut looks kind of heavy but thet won't be a problem..
I will be a while befor I get them installed. I will keep you informed.

Your third reaction, I have had two but you beat me. Who cares what anyone else thinks about the looks, We like them.

Regards

Lets see... I've owned 5 Reactions...

R54 from Bruce's kit JC P60 @13# thrust
72% with MW44 @ 8# thrust
83% with MW44 @ 11# thrust
PST ARF 54 with JC P80 @ 22# thrust
115% Over Reaction with JC P120SX @ 30# thrust.

"Under Reaction" someday?

My favorite? ALL of them at one time or another! EACH has it's special qualities. Easy to fly, easy to transport, easy to see, easy to fly, easy to see, etc.. Did I mention easy to see? :-))

Enjoyed them ALL.

Thanks Bruce!

John:

I really like your Swiss paint job! Looks great! Chris

The pics do not do John's '54 any justice. If you were to see the plane up close and in person you would not believe it is a kit, and actually argue with John that it was NOT a balsa and glass covered model...... untill you look under the hatches.

It had the smoothness and finish of a high end exotic sports car.

I like the R54 lines in flight. It looks short coupled for interesting 1950's era fighter type looks, but it flies sooo nice.

Dave,
FIVE OF THEM!....YOU MUST REALLY LIKE THEM! A REAL REACTION GUY. The reason I'm building a third is my first R54 had a mid-air. Otherwise I would be happy with two. Bruce is sending me a Delta Vortex and I'm going to mount a turbine on that. A friend of mine just built one with a turbine and it flies awesome. I think it is a bit faster than the Reaction, very smooth but not as pretty

Hi Dave,
A friend of mine has a Delta Vortex. He let me fly it a few months ago. Great Airplane. But not as good looking as a Reaction.

I'm glassing the wing on my second. I hope I learned enough on my first so there is no need for a third. Maybe an 83%'r, convertable to floats, in my future.

Mike (File IFR), thank you for your comments on #1. I'm doing my best to live up to your expectations on #2.

Hi guys-
Getting my Reaction ready for for New Zealand's biggest jet meet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcQVzTkJ1WY

I'm taking a handycam this yeah so stayed tuned, I'll try and make a more interesting video this time.

I've already had around 12 flights, and love this plane, being my second jet ( Booma) I'd really have to compare it to a pattern style aircraft- rock solid, point and shoot!
