I started covering my wing last night. That is a big wing and I am glad I did not try and do it by myself. Here is a pic of my friend Dale doing his magic. I hope to have the plane ready to go forSalinas Area ModelersBob Francis Memorial the first weekend end of May. I sure hope mine looks half as good as all of the beautifulR54's on this thread.

Looks like a good start. I do like yeller aircraft.

Last night I was able to get my turbine to light for the first time in 2.5 years.
Looks like my R54 will fly again this year.

Boyz,
I'm having a blast with my Reaction 54. I have a total of 15 flights on it so far and it has been great!! I would like to add smoke now and I know space is at a minimum. I figured I could fit a small tank under the two servos in the fuse and put the pump in the back behind the fuel tank since mine is nose heavy anyway the cg would still be ok.

Has anyone installed a smoke system? If so details would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

When I had mine, I relocated most of the equipment that was in the area in front of the elevator and rudder servos and stuck a standard Du-Bro tank there. Used a Sullivan pump and made my own nozzle with 1/8" stainless tube. The new owner loves the smoke system and doesn't fly without it!

Worked great and still does:

PaulD,

Thank You!!! Bada##! I think the Reaction needs a little something and smoke would be the answer. Dollar for dollar and the ease of operation you cannot go wrong.

Thanks,
Mike

Would 3/32X.014 alum tube work or would the heat melt it?

Todd at dreamworks sells a 304 stainless smoke injector that will withstand the heat.

Looks good.

From my experience I would cover the whole bottom of the rear fuse with aluminum duct tape.
I still managed to melt the covering a few times while slow taxiing down wind till I did the whole bottom aft with AL tape.

Another R54 took to the sky today. Flew great. I was landing way to hot but I will learn how to slow her down. Thanks for all the help Bruce.

This is what it's all about! First time jet pilot, a plane he built with his own hands, and the amazing feelings of pride (and relief) that go along with it. Congrats Chris, and welcome to the R54 family!!!

My sentiments exactly Bruce. I never was a fan of ATFs.

Chris, congratulations. I had the same problem as you with landing to fast. I would balloon all the way down the runway. I watched others fly their R54's and had others fly mine and the landings were perfect. The to fast landing issue finally got resolved when a good friend took me under his wing, hooked up a buddy box and taught me how to slow this bird down. Basically, trim trim trim on the down wind leg so the plane is in a slight nose high attitude (canopy no higher than the vertical stab). Flaps down and power off and let it fly to final with shallow turns. You'll think it's going to fall out of the sky but it won't. With full flaps I've seen R54's land at walking speed.
