Nice Docudrama!!! Chris, what C of G did you fly for the test flights and waiver? Congratulations!!
Thanks for the support Bruce, I'm really loving your design and I'm glad you see my "modifications" as just a bit of color added to the nice canvas the R54 gives us all to work with, rather than an insult to your design!
My new son was just born this week and I'll be putting my model work on the back burner for a bit. But a couple hours here and there are all it will take to get the R54 finished (when everything else is taken care of of course). I've already added the yellow and white color splashes - a little black and red color, and the decals - and we are off to the field with a completed airframe. I'm glad I got plenty of flights done in between finish detail, I'm so comfortable with the handling already I wont feel too timid when I wheel the finished product out to the flight line.

Thanks David, I've been thinking the same way. A little more power will be good for flying off our 400 foot grass strip I want to get up and climb fast to avoid a hill with power lines at the top. The lines are reasonably far away but they look real close when you take off in that direction.

Hi guys!
So, does anyone have a Reaction 54 for sale? Airframe only?
Didn't think so.
Bruce, I'll be calling you tomorrow to order a kit. I lost mine Friday at Leamington jets. Completly my fault.
Equipment is ok (turbine needs some attention by Wren) but the airframe was trashed. Word to the wise, never let your thumb slip off the elevator stick before finishing your pull out of a split S at 4' off the deck, at full power. Makes a mess of things. Debris field was about 100' in diameter.
I do like to do these things spectacularly.
Heh.

Oh yeah, I'll be at Winimac. I've got a Phoenix with Behotec J66 to rip up the skies with. I was planning to maiden it at Leamington Jets, but the constant 15 knot crosswind nixed that idea. Will be trying again at Bay of Quinte. (The R54 handled the crosswind with no problems.)
I'm going to build another R54 because it's the only jet I can fly at my club field, and looks good doing so. My goal is to have it ready for Heart of Ohio.
By the way, the band-aid is still on the wing tip I scraped at HOO. You can view the low pass in the video section of http://rcairgallery.com. Check out "Heart of Ohio Jet Scramble, Jim Brown, Reaction 54".

Eddie, I've slept since that flight but know we put the CG right in the middle of the envelope. Actually lucked out since we didn't have to move anything or add weight. I don't want to steer you wrong and I know Bob remembers the exact number we had, but can tell you it came in exactly in between the forward and aft limit. Flew great there!
If you need more I can find out for you

Eddie P
We had the CG on Maxvertical (Chris R.) aprrox in the middle of the 6 inch to 7 inch range. At 6 inches we were slighly nose heavy, and at 7 inches a little tail heavy.
Mine is around 6.75. I think you can go anywhere between and 6 and 7, as Bruce recommends, and you'll be fine. I'd try 6.5 to start and go from there.

Just thought you guys might like to know about two new R54s. In the past couple of days, I've received emails from a builder in Italy and one in Pakistan who had successful maiden flights. They aren't RCU regulars so you probably wouldn't hear about them otherwise. Congrats to Amilcare and Asif!
I'm not claiming the R54 is a worldwide "sensation"
but they are popping up here and there...

Our club is having a Fun-Fly competition this weekend. Since all I have to fly right now is the R54, I was thinking of flying it in the contest[X(]. I think it would do well in evrything but the touch and go task. It certainly would be something different.[8D]

I think the R54 is perfectly at home at a fun fly. You'll probably win a few converts over to the "dark side" if you bring it to the event

Why not "Touch and Go"?. I do it all the time. I fly from a grass field 300ft x 300ft. My R54 will touch and go all day. Ok I do have a supersport for power but the Mk3 wren would do it also.

I didn't say it wouln't do them. It just won't do them fast enough to compete, like one every five seconds or so.

Except for bragging rights it doesn't matter as the prizes are pulled from a hat and a few of us fly the most beat up almost-non-flyingest pieces of sh..err crap we can keep in the air. It really is a FUNfly.
