It is just lead shot mixed with more JB Weld slapped on the end. Then, after curing, I just grind it down to a bullet-nose shape on the grinding wheel to allow the most efficient shape for getting low and into a tank corner.
You want to use appropriate precautions if you are grinding lead. Another option would be tungsten dust and epoxy. Its even higher density, and tungsten is non-toxic. There are a lot of web stores that sell it for use in Cub Scout Pinewood Derby cars.

I use tungsten powder mixed with epoxy for weighting a lot of things.
I get it at [link=http://www.golfsmith.com/products/9466#]http://www.golfsmith.com/products/9466#[/link]

Thats $20 for 8 oz. The pinewood derby vendors sell smaller amounts, but lower prices too.
[link=http://www.pinewoodextreme.com/detail.asp?item_number=418052]Pinewood Extreme[/link] has it for $2.50 for 2 oz, which is half the price. (note, I did not compare shipping and handling costs).

I went to that link guys. Looks like it went up in price: $4.49 for 2 ounces, before S&H.

Arrgh...I looked it up just before I did the post this afternoon. Well, it is the season for pinewood derby races, and demand is high right now!

this is a reaction i have been wanting to do for a while. it is heavily modified. big robart mains, bvm nose, raised the ride height. bvm wheels and brakes. 120 oz of fuel. 50 oz of smoke. set up for p70. bvm bomb drops. glassed and painted for me by my bud don yockey. 8411's everywhere. some of the mods were inspired here in this thread and some were from flying mine over and over and looking at her and daydreaming. i am in the middle of my top gun project but i will stuff her in a week or two. barry

That is a very nice looking R54.

Is that going to be enough intake area to let the P70 breath?
Mine has bigger intakes and is choking a little.
I am thinking of adding some NACA ducts near the front of the turbine to let in more air.

should be, they are a little bigger than the pics make them look. the inlet area is more than triple the diameter of the front of the p70. we shall see, barry

I only had a couple seconds to initially look at the work on your new R54. To say "WOW" is an understatement now that I've had time to look at the pics for more than a few seconds. I'm very impressed

The details and "scale" additions are excellent and well placed. I just put in a Jet Tech 74 ounce tank in as a replacement to the stock tank - it's a nice tank and though I only have 74 ounces compared to your heap of fuel, I'm excited to have another couple minutes myself. With your fuel load, you'll be able to do loiter work until everyone has landed and hot fueled at least twice [&:]

Get some pics in flight so we can drool over more pictures.

Is very nice. With all the additions, glass and paint was wondering how heavy you came in at. Mine is a bit fat being glassed but the P-70 handles it well. Im still painted in primer, and plan on getting color shot on within the next few weeks.

i kept the glass to 3/4 oz cloth. don kept the paint fairly lite. she doesnt feel heavy, but i will rig her and get a weight. lots of wing area, shouldnt be an issue. taking off with 170oz of fuel and smoke may make for a scale like take off , though. barry

Gotta be 26lbs+ wet with smoke no? Maybe heavier depending on what batteries you use. Looking foward to a flight report.

I almost missed those nav lights on the new R54. I'd also love to see how your fuel plumbing worked out. Are those iron bombs on the outboard stations droppable?

eddie, the outboard bombs are droppable. i used bvm air drops. the inboard tanks are removable. the right tank is for fuel, it plumbs to the 70 oz jet tech and from there to the uat. festo's will be used. highhorse, now you see why i sold alex my old 54 a while back. it would make me build the second kit i had. i have built this model many times in my head and it was time to build it on my bench. my friend don yockey painted her for me, as i dont have time right now from working on my top gun jet. i am gonna fly her for a few months with a p60, my friend is building a 54 at my place as well and he will be buying the 60 from me and at that time i will replace it with the p70. i have hopes that jetcat will have an se version then. also, thanks about my shop. i built my dreamhouse 4 years ago. the wife and i worked with an architect designing it to sit on a corner lot we had bought. i love the house, but the shop is where my heart was at. i have been modeling since i was 14 and i had seen that shop in my mind for a long time now. i have a detached 3 1/2 car garage, and the shop is the same size and it sits on top of the garage. i have a main room, 4 large closets, 2 with shelves, 2 for med to large models, a kitchenette, full bath, and and an extra room that stores all of the giant stuff. i can make all the dust in the main room and still have most of my models clean. but lastly i am a clean freak, so after a major build or sand job, i give it a good cleaning before moving forward. i also, wanted a museum feel, so i have collected old pics etc and hungem up. i call the shop "the place to be". anyone is welcome. if you are coming to houston, let me know. barry

Hi Guys. I'm sure It's here somewhere but a search turned up zip.

I have a used -54 and need the CG location please.

It's easy enough to calculate but i'd like real-world experiences if you don't mind. How far aft before this gets goofy? How far forward before it's a pig?

Thanks, Don.
