RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
I now have some of the original Red paint as used by the Reds and will be spraying some samples on white plastic so PM me if you need a small sprayed sample, around 1 square inch. No charge from me for post etc but if you would like to make a donation, however, small , to the Red Arrows Macmilan Appeal that would be sincerely appreciated. That said, the red paint I recommended earlier seems to be spot on but the blue is slightly too dark. I have a sample of the exact blue so will match it at the local paint supplier and pass on the number for you all.
The 2006 season is coming to a close so the final team for next year may not have been decided (plus there's a new leader) so the Red 7 may be another pilot next year and so will the "Blues" member , the techie who accompanies the aircraft in transit and whose name appears under that of the pilot. Aircraft allocation is rotated to even out fatigue life so serials may change. I guess all will soon be revealed on the RAFAT web sit via Rachael Huxford, the PR lady who has been so helpful to me.
For anyone with an interest in formation jet aeros as well as the Hawk then you will enormously enjoy the recent BBC TV programme on Red Arrows pilot selection, there is some great air to air photography. I have a VHS copy but has anyone got a DVD recording. ?
My two Hawks will be those of Dicky Patounas, XX 237 this year's leader as I have the markings, and Scott Morley who has kindly invited me to take my model to Scampton for an in-season practice session and a team photo next year.
Lights. Ther Reds a/c have single pulse strobes (switched off in formation, the Swiss Hawks a double pulse) and Flugmodellbau.de can oblige. I bought these plus a landing lamp at Jet Power and pronptly lost them so anyone who found a white plastic bag with these items plus some GF board and AMT clamps please advise !
Regards,
David Gladwin.
PS I made copious measurements of various details, antennae, vents etc on a real Hawk and will copy my notes onto the computer soon. If anyone wants a print out please PM me.
PPS anyone worked out how to do the tertiary MLG door yet.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Spent some of this morning doing a few paint touch-ups on my Hawk using the the 2k paint, Glasurit 01 05 80 which I had matched to a sample sent to me some time ago. After this I sprayed some white plastic using the paint actually used on the Red's aircraft, (I believe the RAF are using a Courtaulds paint) the match is absolutely perfect, with just that hint of orange to it. I sprayed enough plastic for about 20 samples 2 inches by 1inch for anyone who needs one in case you can't get Glasurit paints. PM me if I can help.
The BS number is 381c 537, signal red.

David Gladwin.

David,
Thanks for the light info. Would also be very grateful for the vanes/vents notes when typed up.
As for the gear door, not sure if these will help at all?.....

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Here are some pics of what i did with the outer doors
Explained it earlier but i have used bvm door cyliders to actuate(so as to avoid jaming)
And have hinged the doors on the front side with a ball joint attached to the door and a
rod attached at an angle under the wing skin(allowing the door hinge to swivel at this point)
the rear hinge is a normal custom made ofset hinge(which is glued in last to add strenght and to allow the bvm cylider to push
the door open at this rear point of the door)
Hope this makes sense(its a painful job but works well at the end)

Looking very nice indeed Francois, the very best of luck with the first flight. Geoff White finds his a delight to fly and mine wont be long now, delayed by 3 months in the UK.
Yep, I'll send you a full rear view and a couple of hundred others !

David

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi Guys
The test flight weekend is complete and i can report back that the plane flies beatifully
My friend Mark Savage took the first flight honours and thereafter it was up to me we had a total of 5 flights over the weekend.
we did however experience a flame out on the first flight attempt the moment the plane rotated(assuming its this static problem)luckily the runway was long
and she just settled back down,on all the other flights(actually all 5 thereafter)we mearly lifted the plane off the groung after taxing out(before the take off run)and she never gave any further trouble(will be trying to find a solution to this problem soon i hope)Flight characteritics, AMAZING even at 5000 feet above sea level powered by a p160(only needed to set the idle rpm up slightly)The suggested cg is to conservative an i moved it back almost 10mm after the first flight and she flew and specifically landed much beter, springs in the
oleos may need some stiffining(i will keep you posted)
Here are some pics i had as soon as i receive the others from my happy photographer(my brother)i will post them to
Best regards
Francois

Congrats Francios,
I also found the CG a little forward for me and moved it back. Regarding the springs, I also find them way to soft and will stiffen them a bit.
All I have to do now is to spray mine!
Geoff.
P.S. had 17 flights on mine now and had no issue with flameout, yet.

No I ain't Ant but I don't want to a argument by stating that I haven't had a problem with static due to the fact that I am using a Pegasus HP and not a P160..
ooops did I say that

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Congratulations, Francois, never thought it would be a problem particularly with smoothie Mark on the sticks !
Springs, My second Hawk gear is MUCH stiffer than the first. I ordered some new springs from AW but in fact the problem is solved by inserting two collars, which AW sent to me, about 3/4 inch long. I have revamped the nose hatches to be MUCH stiffer and exactly conform to fuselage profile, photo later.
Congratulations again and more photos are on the way to you.

David Gladwin.

Hi why are you guys having so much problems with that outer door? My friend hooked his up with a link to the strutt and it worked perfect....

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
There may be a difference between working well and scale, the apparent hinge line of the door is 25 to 30degrees off wing datum. When the door is open it should be in line with the airflow, is this how your friends looks?

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Anyone routinely flying this off grass with success? and what are your views on total build time in hours? A nice Hawk has been an ambition of mine for some time and this one seems the ticket. Id more or less given up on 'proper' scale jets off grass strips but it seems that gear designers are learning!

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Ok...i now have a shiny Hawk kit to build...(thank you Mark!). Im a little concerned about static build up with this model, ive heard it can be particularly susceptible. I have heard that a few people have had issues with turbine shutdown on take-off. I have read some theories that this might be due to large kevlar fuel tanks and fuel sloshing around causing stati build up, and then discharge causing shutdown. Apparently rememdies include conductors around the fuel tank (although where to i dont know!?) and conductive fuel line. Anyone made any mods to the Hawk to address this issue?

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi Guys
Some news on my model
I flew her in the South African Open the past weekend and i can report back that my static
was the highset of the competition(the plane is clearly a good contest model)and i finished second overall(mark savage
just piped me with his immaculate L39),i may have one had it not been for the last flight were i scored zero for my landing as i ran out of time(i am
using the kersene start and the sometimes longer spool up time does make the 10min rule quit tight)
Regarding the static problem both Mark and myself have now been suffering from this(my hawk with a jetcat and his L39 with a pegasus)and seems
the only way we managed this was by lifting the planes off the ground after taxing out and before the take off run.
We are working hard to find the cause and solution for this but i do suggest that the guys planning test flights etc soon should consider our temporary
plan in the mean time(as a flame out at the wrong time can be quit detrimental)
Anyway i can tell you the plane flies beautifully and is a awesome contest flying machine and is as solid as can be in the air
Will post some pics as soon as i receive them from the vent organisers
Regards
Francois

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Congratulations, Francois, nice model. PM waiting for you re pitots.
Few tips as work proceeds:
On Hawk 2 I stiffened the access doors to exactly retain fusalage shape:
Applied a layer of carbon cloth inside the fuselage over the door area plus about i.5 inches. After this had really hardened i added light ply stiffeners to both door and fuslage and THEN cutout the doors. they are now much stiffer, conform EXACTLY to fuselage shape and close with a satisfying "clack ". Note the corrected radii of the corners of the hatch.
The flap hinge fairings won't conform to the cambered wing lower surface if retaining the flat flanges from the moulded sheet.
I added balsa "bases" to the fairings before cutting from the sheet and removed the moulded flange completely. The wing will have release agent added and filler will be used on the balsa surface so it exactly conforms to wing camber. Thin flanges from 010 glass board will then be added, the release agent cleaned up and the fasirings glued to cover the hinges.
The blue for the RAF roundels I gave earlier is not quite right ( I matched it to Ralle's decals) As I now have a small amount of original paint, not enough to do the whole job on both Hawks, I asked the local car paint supplier to mix BS381c , 110 result a perfect match using the Glasurit tables.
Hawk 2 almost ready for primer, just some flap work to finish, mainly concerning the scale flap vanes.
