The ideal opportunity to get some hard independently verified figures for both these engines and any other engines of any size that manufacturers might like to submit will be the annual GTBA efficiency weekend to be held over the 12th-13th November in the UK.
Any manufacturers care to bring along or submit their engine(s)?.... to build what I think would be a very useful data base for all turbine flyers both current and prospective.

The Merlin produces a bit over 17 kg thrust @118K rpm. The Nexus has 16,3 kg thrust and max rpm 122K. pr [link=http://www.simjet.com/C1256F6600773F26/getPopup/00C25970BCE7457AC1256F6A0033D0AA?open]SimJet web site[/link]. In other words more thrust @ less rpm with the Merlin.
I have been using the Merlin for a year now and it's been working flawlessly all along. My Eurosport goes vertical from take-off with a weight of just over 17 kg's with the Merlin running @116K. The acceleration is the best I've seen.
Good luck with your choice!

Fuel consumption is also higher on the Nexus.... 18.90oz/min and Merlin @ 14.81oz/min
Have no personal experience with the Nexus to comment on performance.

Well have a look at this. http://www.jets-munt.com/M160perf.htm and http://www.simjet.com/C1256F6600773F...A0033D0AA?open
Look at the first chart on the jets-munt site. 15°C at sea level. That is a standard day. All SimJet measurement are based on a standard day
Merlin 116000rpm 15,9 kg/trust and 555ml/min
NEXUS 122000rpm 16,3 kg/trust and 550ml/min

Somebody have mixed up their ml to oz conversion. Somebody who know how to convert ml - oz??
SimJet state: 550ml/18,59 oz @ 122k, 16,3 kg (36,0lbs)
Merlin state: 555ml/18,30 oz @ 116k, 159,3N (35,5lbs)
: 594ml/19,60 oz @ 118k, 171,5N (38,2lbs)
: 622ml/20,50 oz @ 120k, 180,8N (40,3lbs)
Merlins has over 2 lbs more thrust @ 4k less rpm....
Merlins are delivered pushing 171,5N @ 118k. Would not surprise me if they will be delivered as 180N (40lbs) @120k in the future....

Well this is part of the 2 minute 119,600 rpm run a year ago at the GTBA event.......
www.btinternet.com/~robrow/18kgs.WMV
Would be great if some of you Simjet guys or any of the other manufacturers could make it over to the UK for this years event in 2 weeks, or even send an engine or two ?

I knew the Nexus was running at higher rpm, but over a million rpm.....?

Conversion for oz/ml:
1,0 US Ounce is 29,573 ml ore 1,0ml is 0,0338 US Ounce
1,0 UK Ounce is 28,413 ml ore 1,0ml is 0,0351 UK Ounce
Maybe that is the mix up

I have seen/heard both engines in action. I fly the Nexus in my Eurosport (that I just sold) and had great fun. I can't say how much fun it is to fly it with a Merlin, but I'm quite sure it's fun too.
Etibedossa: You need to look at the service you can get from the dealer you choose. And also talk to people who have theese engines. You can't ask anyone here which engine is better, because we will all say, that our own brand is the best. (History shows
)
Wish you luck.
Happy SimJet Nexus owner.

There are always two sides to a story, Scott.
If you had a Dragon, that must have been several years ago. Anyway, my personal NEXUS puts out almost 17 kg. (37,4 lbs) at 122.000 rpm. Last I spoke to Lars, he said that they were aiming for 18 kg. but still have a way to go yet. One other thing is, that the temperature of my engine is quite low. 480 degrees celcius in idle.

I think this is why engine manufacturers should be sending engines to the GTBA weekend, we can build an independant data base of all manufacturers engines.
Surely that can only serve as a good thing where informed customer choice is concerned?

Hello
There is a very usefull Turbine performance chart in the RADIO CONTROL JET INTERNATIONAL. This shows the Merlin with a .5 kg thrust more than the Nexus fuel consumption is slightly better than the Nexus, but installed weight of the Merlin is is 1.01 LBS heavier than the NEXUS, giving a thrust to weight of 3.51 for the Merlin and 3.77 for the Nexus!!!!!!!!!
I Fly The Skygate Hawk at 20kg weight with the Nexus and the performance is superb.
Kindest regards
John
