Default Boomerang XL II

Hi ,
Just got a peek at my friends new Boomerang XL all I can say is" WOW" . I will be getting one from the next shipment. Is any one out there currently building one ? If not I thought a build thread on the XL will be a good way to share building tips etc. I will be more than happy to post photos and comments as soon as I get mine started . My friend has a new engine on hold for me. The next shipment will be in late May. My friend's will be ready for maiden any day now just waiting for a replacement strut from Robart.
Can't wait.

Thanks Ragz,
I am just starting out. I don't even know what brand engine I am getting from my friend . I know it puts out 28 pound of thrust and it's brand new in the box.
Good luck with your build.

I have a Boomerang XL in the Thunderbirds scheme.I put the first 3 flights on mine yesterday. What an awesome easy to fly & SUPER fun jet !!Mine has a Artes Super Eagle(30 lbs)

Lands VERY slow with absolutely no bad tendacies whatsoever. On the 2nd & 3rd flight took off with 1 /2 flaps and was airborne in less than 50 feet to to straight out vertical!! What a blast this baby's gonna be and looks very awesome in flight too!!It certainly isn't a very fast jet(maybe 130-140 max)which aint bad at all in my book for a jet this large(97 inches long & 94 wingspan)Sure is a very relaxing fun jet nonetheless.

I am carrying 3.75 liters on board(via glow fuel bottle)and have 40 oz of smoke and guided by my new Futaba 14MZ radio.Weight RTF Less fuel is 29 lbs!![8D]You guys are gonna love this jet without a doubt!!

IMO the best all around retracts are the Jet-1As from digitech, though they are a little pricey

Anurag

I am using the custom Spring Air 40 HD's that they made specifically for the XL.I am using those along with 1/2" Robart struts and the Airpower disc wheels & brakes that Boomerang Jets sells as a combo option along with the XL ARF kit.In all honesty these Airpower Wheels & Brakes work far better that my BVM Kingcat brakes do!!

In regards to the availibilty of the Robart struts.I ordered mine from my LHS and had them in only 3 working days. The same thing goes with the custom 402 SA Gear, there are plenty of those on hand at SA.I am told that SA keeps a good stock of these as a result of how many XL's they are selling all the sudden. The XL was a huge hit as I am told at FJ 06 .They sold 7 kits just at that event back in March

I am gonna go fly my XL multiple times again tomorrow and will take lots of pics for you guys.I will snap some aerial shots as well as interior layout shots, etc.Anything else you guys wanna see on mine??

Yes Steve, mine still in the box.[:@] I was out of town completing a 1st phase of a training. And the accessories needed to complete the plane were sent back to Todd.[] I just recive them this week. Thank's Todd!

Now I will continue with it If time permits. After been out of home for 15 days have a lot work to do. My builder still very busy with two other projetcts so, he's only supervicing my progress. Hope to get it airborne by the end of month.

Hi Steve,
I just ordered the gear and brakes for the Boomerang. Does the gear set come with struts or do I have to purchase them separatly. I ordered the 349.00 retracts and 199.00 brake system
Thanks.

Jef,

The struts do not come with the Spring Air gear. For the 349.00 price you are getting the 402 Spring Air retracts themselves along with just wire legs(not functional struts)What I did was buy JUST the retracts themselves from Patricia for 299.00 and then I ordered Robart struts from my LHS-if memory serves me right the nose strut was 39.00 and each main strut was 57.00.I'd strongly recommend going with struts and not using the wire legs -granted you are gonna spend more with struts but they are well worth it in every way.

I used the same wheels & brakes that you are buying(the Airpower disc versions )These are great units-you'll be very pleased with the wheels & brakes from Airpower teamed up with the SA retracts & Robart struts

I have been flying the other large non composite Boomerang with wire struts. They work great. What is nice is when you have a landing and go into a rough area you just bend the wire back. I have just finished the new XL. Spring air has an adapter to fit wire strut to retracts. I am using the robart 630 and wire struts.
If you are using the struts and on grass, I think you had better beef up the area well. So far at our field, the score is wire struts 0, struts 4 for tearing out the retracts.

You just simply need the ones that are 1/2 " ,they are very beefy and a real bargain at 150 bucks! My builder did go in and reinforce the gear mounts/supports with Hysol which I would highly recommend doing if you can

I started work on the XL last night. I am truly impressed at how ARF this kit is. One can actally have a speed building competition with this plane. Maybe 20 hours I reckon??? I couldnt be happier with my decision to get the XL.

This pic here clearly shows just how BIG the XL really is,that is my Kingcat behind my XL and we all know Kingcat's are rather large jets in their own right!!BTW my Kingcat is about to get a beautful Blue Angels Paintjob!!

Anurag,

Yes my builder said it went together very easily/quickly,like any ARF jet 75% of the work is final setup /electronics layout. Here is one of the interior layout.I unfortantly didnt get any aerial shots cause the camera battery was on the fritz![:@]

Last one,I will get some aerial shots next weekend! This XL is a very BIG jet and it's so much fun .I gave a few other pilots some stick time last weekend and they agree!

One piece of very helpful/friendly advice I can offer is this.I'd highly advise not using anything shy of 30 lbs thrust with the XL.I have a Artes Super Eagle on mine (30 lbs) and while it has awesome vertical, the top end is very limited however,my XL weighs 29 lbs dry .I'd estimate that the top end is 130 at best! It is just a huge draggy jet.

What I'm getting at is that if you use anything less than say 28 lbs of punch your gonna be disappointed with the performance. While speed isn't everything of course we sure like to see atleast 120 or so with our jets !! I'm personally happy with the power/speed that my Super Eagle offers
