Default Maine Jet Rally -- Now With Event Write Up, Movies and Pics

Just got back from the airport -- yep, it's 12:30. The event is going great guns! 42 pilot registered so far, 8 more arrived late in the day, more to come tomorrow. Man it's a good year! I'm exhausted, so it's time for bed, but here is one quickee photo for you guys who didn't make it. Let just say, it's one hell of a feeling to look this sucker dead in the eye when its barreling toward you at 200 feet off the deck. Tomorrow, more jet flying and the L39 airshow! Wooohooo!

Thanks Paul. I will get a lot of pics tomorrow. Today was very busy logistically.

63 registered pilots! That beats our last record. People are really enjoying our flying site. If you can't land in 7,000 feet, you can't land period.

Here is a shot from our afternoon airshow. Dan McCue is flying Bob Davis' absolutely gorgeous L39, and the gear are almost retracted as he accelerates toward the 4,000 foot mark.

man that looks cool as hell, but I need to ask one question. Why is he flying over the other aircraft? I mean, I wouldnt want someone to fly over mine if I had one like that.

Default RE: Fun In The Sun At The Maine Jet Rally

3 spectacular days of jet flying with awesome weather (thank goodness for the temps in the 70s on Sunday), an incredible site, 63 registered pilots, an L-39 airshow, an F4U Corsair airshow, demos by David Shulman and John Glezellis, a lobster and steak dinner on-site -- put them all together and you might have just a small idea of what the Maine Jet Rally is about. If you also factor in the comraderie, the joking, much laughter, the extracurricular activities, the attractions of coastal Maine and getting to watch Ray turn into a lobster before your very eyes, you are getting significantly closer to realizing that what we have here is something really special. As David Shulman said, it's an undiscovered (relatively) gem.

Whatever you do, don't miss this event next year. After all, you wouldn't want to be big-time, overworked, scared-to-drive-at-night and scared-to-fly-in-front-of-people losers like Adil and Wojtek now would you?

Some of the highlights from this show for me were:

1) Getting a call at 8:30 Friday morning from Jim Brown telling me that pilots were lined up at the entry gate, so where the heck was I. Easy Jim, I'm two minutes away!

2) Watching Dan McCue bring the corsair in on Friday and do LOW passes over us. Goose bump material people. That is a big, scary looking airplane with a monster propeller.

3) Dave Shulman's demo with the BVM Ultra Bandit complete with tail wags set to the beat of U2's "Hello Hello."

4) Dave' warmup flight -- Marc Brady and I were standing behind him and absolutely cringing.

5) John Glezellis' fantastic aerobatic demo set to music.

6) Hearing full-scale L-39 pilot Bob Davis tell us that he insists on going first in the demos next year since David and John upstaged him.

7) Having the FAA representative tell us "Great job guys!"

8) Seeing how incredibly proficient these pilots who I have known for 8+ years have become. Amazing job all of you.

9) Getting to catch up with friends and meet great people I have never met before like Mike Lesher (see you in Lebanon next year Mike!), RCPete, Jucier . . .

I was so busy on Saturday that I really only got quick glimpses of all the action, but as always I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I am already looking forward to next year. There's only one problem -- how do you top this?

Take care all. Time to post some pics.

Antony

Whatever you do, don't miss this event next year. After all, you wouldn't want to be big-time, overworked, scared-to-drive-at-night and scared-to-fly-in-front-of-people losers like Adil and Wojtek now would you?

Ouch!![:@]

I still have not gotten over not being able to attend at the last moment but I had no choice with work....[]

I did however call regularly to check in on the action. I know its not the same as being there but....
Looks as if I missed a great time. I will of course try my best not to miss it again as it is one event that is a MUST GO TO in my books.

I must say however... That I feel special now getting a few messages from Anthony through some of the attendies regarding me not being there and it kinda makes me think I was thought of and missed [sm=bananahead.gif]

Shulman was also missing you Adil. I think it went some thing like whos going to catch all the crap now that Adils not here. I think he was worried that it was going to be him, lucky Joe G. came through again and won the award for most abused.

Hey Antony, and Ray too!

Thanks bunches for putting on the best Maine Jet Rally ever! Spectacular does not begin to describe this years event. I have no idea how you guys are going to top what you did, but I can't wait to find out. :-)

You're diagram above regarding David's practise altitude is interesting. I think I managed to snap a shot when he was almost at that "I'm feeling loose now" altitude.

I'll be posting lots more pics and vids on my website soon, including the Corsair "arrival" and airshow.

Regards,
...jim
