Default Winter Project Underway: Bryon BD-5J

Finally found my winter project to get started on.. a classic "Byron BD-5J". Going to "restore" it, im going to use a os91 and a byron fan, just like the orignal. Was able to pick up one from a friend farely reasonable. Plane wasn't in too bad of shape. Wings in pretty good shape, need to make servo boxes in the wings for flaps and ailerons. Plus make new flaps and ailerons, then I can glass it. Had a broken elevator, and rudder:

Started sanding the old paint off, 4 coats to sand thru! Be nice when ppl repaint a plane to remove orignal paint first IMO.

Rudder 95% repaired, just need to add a small piece of sheeting:

Need a little help.. If anyone has the plans for this kit, or could tell me the lengths for the flaps and ailerons it would be apperiated!!

More pics after I sand over 2 lbs of paint off the fuse.

Hi I can help I built a turbine version, the flaps are 2 3rds of the span, use a wing max servo in the rudder for rudder, and a carbon push rod w y for elevators, os 91 weston pipe combo, and the spring air gear for the 3/8th robo strutts(the plane needs them) bvm sport wheels and brakes... ill get you the cg and i might have the old foam flap, i made balsa alerons and flaps! and sheeted the wing w glass you could use thin balsa and moocote NO GLASS for ducted fan keep her light, also you can use BULL DOG bumper stripper for the paint removal wont hurt the polyester! Sand first w 80 gritt do a small test area to see how long to get the paint to crack with a brush, once you wash off with water you wont get another stripp so you need to time right Vey fun plane to fly!

Well the Bulldog bumper stripper worked perfect. I was able to get 90% of the paint off the fuse with 2 cans. Need to buy I more can to get the rest off.

Jetsett99... you have a photo of the tourbine mount? I wanted to compare it to Rick's.

well finally after a few months (from working 2 jobs)I was able to return to restoring my BD-5:

I scrapped the old elevator stabs, made completely new ones. glassed and have them ready to install on fuse:

See in the picture I glassed the vertical stab and rudder (fill work about 80% completed)

I took the foam wing cores and sheeted them with 1/16" balsa sheeting. Counter sunk the servo mounts in the bottom of the wing panels. Finish will be ultra-cote covering.

Thanks again to Rick in (georgia) for the plans and help!

Well another 2 solid 8 hrs of working it (what a way to recover from galbladder surgery!). Got the horiztonal stables installed got all the fill work finally done. Tonight I was able to primer the fuse.

Wet sand and time to go to paint shop!

On a side note.. talked on the phone with IronBayMOdels today for about 25-30minutes. Unfortantely there are unable to make any new clamshell reversers for me, my other parts were no problem. Anyone with a scale drawing or a damaged pair I could use to get a new set made from the local tin shop?

Guys I ned help. Just finished my BD-5 converted for turbine.

1st proplem is CG. When I use the CG that comes with the kit, it is so close to the Main gear if you push down on the back it will sit on it's butt. Very little weight holding the nose down. It doesn't even compress my stut the slightest bit.

2nd problem is I can't control it on the ground. When it gaines the least little bit of speed it gets so squirly on ground handling I have to abort. I have tried putting low rates where it will barely turn and it still goes crazy. Also tried holding down elevator. Nothing has worked.

Anyone got any idea or had the same problem?

Doug

TRY TOE IN ON GEAR ABOUT 1/8 INCH ,,CASTER IN FRONT GEAR ,,TO THE AFT ,NOT FORWARD.. IF TAIL HEAVY,IT WILL SKID ON NOSE WHEEL.. HOLD DOWN ELEVATOR.. MAKE SURE NO FLEX IN STEERRING, AND GOOD STRONG SERVOE. NO MUSHY TIRES .. LOOKS SUPER ..AND YOU WILL LOVE HOW IT FLYS.. BEST TURBINE TRAINER ,,I THINK??? RD

Doug, What kit is it? If it is a Byron hold some up ele.on take off. Also the CG for the Byron BD is close to the mains but not behind them. The Byron get very tail heavy so make sure the model balances level or slighty nose down at the CG (no fuel), balance inverted. The CG for the Byron is 3 1/4 aft of wing leading edge at center section. Hope this helps. Rick

Rick,
Any luck with those reverse thruster templates?

Anyone have them? plzzzz.... I need thrust reversers!! lol

On a side note, since I just obtained my turbine waiver (Woo hooo!) I am thinking about converting mine over the winter. I am gonna fly rest of the flying season on df, then if extreme jets bd-5 ARF is done Ill buy it, if not ill convert this one.

Thanks Rick. It is the Byron kit. I tried holding up elevator, down elevator, low rates, etc.... Everythig I could think of. It still is just impossible for me to control on the ground once it gains a little speed. I have it balanced at exactly 3.25" behind leading edge at center section. I am about to give up as I have tore the mains out twice now, running of the side of the runway. I just don't know?????

Zag, I have a set of the thrust reversers you can have, but I am in China on business until Dec. I could mail them to you if you want. They should fit in a big envelope. YOu pay shipping charge. Usually around $20 WHEN i send documents to my home in Mississippi.

Let me know

Doug

Doug, The BD flys well, just got to get thru the steering issue. I had that problem when I was flying a DF Byron BD and didn`t want to go thru that with the P80 powered BD. I have changed the nose retract to a Robart 556RS (95degree extend) and a Robart 656 straight strut with a fork, and 2 3/4" BVM sport jet wheel. Very little left and right steering for take off. On the mains I have Robart 551 RS retracts, these extend 85 degrees. This helps to keep more of the tire tread on the ground and also makes up for the dihedral in the wings. The main struts are Robart 660 straight struts 7/16". I hope this might help. Rick

Etops,
2 3/4" on the nose? I was putting 2 3/4" on mains and a 2 1/2" on nose.

Doug, The nose and mains wheels are 2 5/8 " BVM sport/grass with brakes. Sorry for the confusion, had to measure them and look it up in the catalog. Rick
