Default TAMJETS A-4 SKYHAWK

Anyone besides the Tam crew have it ? I'd like some feedback on it as I'm putting one together, actually let me correct myself, I'm having someone build it

Thanks in advance...

As you know Ian has his thread here but I am building one myself, too.

I've done all the pre-paint prep on all the parts. I've shaved and filled the seams, and done some work on making the turbine hatch, canopy and nose cone joints as seamless as I can. That's not necessary, they are good quality to start but I was waiting for components to finish the build so I thought "why not". If one is NOT a perfectionists, there is little to do as the gel coat is good quality. I tend to over do the paint prep, lots of primer, take it all off again, prime again and then take nearly all of it off and then it's ready to paint. You'd probably get away with one coat of primer and a sanding, then paint, if you are like most.

I'll be installing the majority of the components from now on for the nextcouple weeks or so. I've been thinking about posting a few pictures to Ian's thread just to add to what's there for others but I don't want to hijak

No problem Eddie, post away. I started painting color this weekend so things are moving along. The bottom of the wings are painted and the gear pods. I am definately not a perfectionist but I do want to make the jet look as good as I can though. Painting is really tricky as you know and the finish is only as good as the prep.

Johnny

I've got one but have only pulled it out of the box to account for all the bits and pieces. (IMO) The kit is well built and of high quality. wings/stabs to fuse fit is superb. minor if any putty to get that seamless joint look.

I'm very impressed with the kit overall and look forward to putting it together in the future. presently, i'm just sitting on the bird due to other committments but didn't want to miss the opportunity to grab one of these birds.

Dougie Fresh (aka Afterburner1) sings the praises for the birds flying qualities.

cheers

Hi Jack. I posted a thread here a few weeks ago about this, there are as many techniques as projects out there. They all seems to work well based on the results. I've updated the thread with an email that Colin Straus sent me, his projects are outstanding and his method worked great for me.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_51...tm.htm#5341950

Ian, IMHO the really good news about a camoflauge paint scheme, besides looking really cool, is the fact that you don't have to lay on so much primer and sand for twelve days straight to get the base perfect for a high gloss finish! The color breaks and the matt finish of a real camo military paint job gives us that one concession in return for the havoc it wreaks with us when we try to get the pattern and paint placement perfect! I'm looking forward to getting some paint on mine too.

I agree. I am hoping to get done soon. As much fun as painting can be "sometimes", if it drags on longer than necessary it can get REAL boring!!!

Well, the plane arrived today and everything's accounted for. I like everything I see, specially how strong it is. This is the first time I've ever owned an ARF and I must say that Tam has gone all out. I think I'll have her ready to fly in three weeks painted and everything. I went with the white gelcoat so I can scale it out the way I like. I will be powering this one with a Jetcat P-70. I'll post pictures as progress is made, the goal is Florida Jets with drop tanks and all the vortex generators on the wings.

Hope next couple day I'll get better to start working on the A-4 again. The instruction manual is done from kit to ARF. Now from ARF to finish is what I got to finish. Most the hard part of the manual is done already. Now it just fine detail photos to finish off.
I'll share some photos here to help you guys in the next couple days.

Ronnie,

I think you may want to reconsider that thought, the trick to this bird is keeping it light. I'm getting the impression that mine will weigh over 20 Lbs dry, I'm not 100% sure of that yet.

Well here's my update, this week my builder has gotten everything done. All servos are mounted, gear, hardware, fuel tanks, etc.. Monday the turbine will be fitted and primer will begin. By next weekend she'll be 100% ready to go painted, drop tanks will be here in 2 weeks from today as tooling and molds are being made specially for it.

Hey Jetflyer, did your builder take pics along the way? If so, mind posting? That's great you'll have yours built so quickly.

Hi Joe,

Tam's drop tanks will not be available for quite sometime according to the conversation I had with him. I'm having someone else do them for me. Once my tanks are done they will be available to the public to sell along with the hardpoints ( pylons ) to mount them.

Eddie, I'll swing by there today if I get a chance and shoot pictures to post of everything that he's done so far. I honestly think that it goes together very fast, keep in mind that the builder I have is what he does for a living, all day everyday ( no weekends ), that's the main reason why the jet is at this stage. I usually stop by his house on my way home from my office to check up on things.

Today we did the maiden flight. Everything is perfect. There is zero trim flight or landing.
Weight in 18.5 lbs dry power with Jetcat P-60. It is a perfect combination.

One thing on the gear is doesn't like air restrictor. I had it install on the main. I had problem getting the main to retract up. Dave had to roll invert for the gear to goes up.
If you guys install the gear. Don't put any air restrictor. Is O.K. for the gear to slam hard when cycle the gear on the ground. But once inflight. The drag will slow down gear. I go to remove the air restrictor before taking to Speed World.
