Can batteries for trucks be used in jets? I am looking at a 4600Mah NicMH battery made by Venom Racing that is perfect for my need. I know that the elctrical plug will need to be changed, but is there any reason that I should not use them? Thanks.

A lot of NiCd / NiMH ecu packs are car/truck packs. I've been flying with them since 2003 (moving up to LiPo's this year..). Some mfg do not recommend NiMH packs on ECU's, it is best to check before you buy.....

If you mean Wren...they are coming with 2 cell lipos now...they are one manufacturer that recommended not to use nimh batteries for the ECU

Some of the early cells had high impedence. They're much improved now but also gained a little weight in the process.

Yeah, but they want seventy bucks for a car pack with a multiplex connector on it[X(]. Now if it had a BVM sticker on it, I could understand.

I used a 4500 mAH NiMh battery from Cheap Battery Packs.com for my ECU battery. I needed the weight of the NiMH to Balance my Boomerang.

Aren't all car packs $70? Here is my interpretation of what I was trying to say, "If JetCat sells NIMH battery packs for their engines, then they must be okay for turbine use." Sometimes it just won't come out right

Seriously though, we do use NIMH ECU packs on a variety of turbines without problem.

Question for all.......If you had a 2500mah nicad......2500mah nimh......or a 2500mah li-poly, isn't the electricity coming from the pack the same? I know there is are weight, size, charging differences, even discharge characteristics, but does it make a difference when you finally get the power at the plug?

they are all the same CAPACITY, but not necessarily the same voltage, voltage is dependent on cell count.

NiMh are more notorious for having a high impedance internal to the cells and drop allot of voltage under load, this all to often will cause a failed start, especially on a Kero start turbine. same with the Li-Ion, they tend to lack the current capabilities as well. as mentioned technology has improved the NiMh packs and they are now more able to produce the current required during start without dropping in voltage significantly. LiPo's IMO are excellent batteries for turbine use, they most often provide very high C ratings but some MFGs still advise against them and for that i don't understand unless they are worried about the hazards of the lithium batteries.

I agree that Li-po's are excellent to use in turbine applications due to their ability to deliver the current and their low weight but I will never use them in a jet unless the weight was a huge issue. To me, it's just like adding fuel to the fire. If you have a flameout or lockout and are lucky enough to not have a fire due to impact or fuel tank rupture, why have a chance of your battery spewing flames and possibly igniting a downed jet that might have some salvagable parts namely the engine. If I was to go to lithiums, I would look into the Lithium Manganese which supposedly don't burst into flames when exposed to the air and can supply the needed current. BTW, I use Li-po's for the many electrics I have and I've never had a problem but they don't fly at 200mph and cost mucho$$ either . Just my 2.5 cents.

JetCat sells a 3700 NiMh battery for the kerostart engines. I bought one of them for my P-180.
They will deliver the power...they only have 3 M Ohm impedance rating.
Besides capacity, impedance is the most important thing to know about a battery. The lower the impedance (internal resistance of the battery) the faster the battery can be charged, and the faster it will discharge....low impedance=high discharge and high charge rates. A low imopedance rating is expressed in Millivolts....3 Mv is very low for our uses.

Currently using NiMH 3300 on my JetCat kero start. I need to replace a battery soon. Is anyone using the Lithium Manganese battery. If so, how many flights on a charge. Also, what do they weigh. I need the weight of the 3300 to balance the Boomerang. What type of charger is needed. I have Duralite and Triton chargers.

Believe it or not but Radio Shack has 3300 NiMH 7.2 volt battery packs for only 24.99 each---Cut off the Tamiya/Molex connector and solder on the Multiplex---Works like a champ and CHEAP!!!!

You can still find the good ones if you look for 'em---

Guys--we aren't straining these batteries by ANY means....When I (I mean when my son gets through) playing with our RC car the batteries are pretty warm---Which is something that I have never experienced with our turbine batteries on startup...Yes, we need a battery with enough punch to get the turbine started but after that the current draw is pretty low. I've easily had four starts and flights with the Radio Shack battery. After four flights I like to top off the pack for insurance reasons---I've NEVER had a flameout due to a low battery..For that matter---I've never had a flameout of any type!!

I talked to jetcat friday and they said that they are using NiMh batteries. I asked about Venom Racing battery packs and that brand is one that they are using. I purchased one from an ebay store for $ 49.99 4600Mah new. Normal price was $89.99.
