Leaking UAT, advice please
Hi all,
I have just noticed my UAT is leaking through the lid thread while filling and also is only half full after a flight although the main tank is still 1/3 full. I guess it is pulling air in while running. Is there and approved way of sealing them? Wrapping the threads with PTFE tape maybe? The lid was tight!
Best Regards
Roger

RE: Leaking UAT, advice please
Roger,
The UAT has PTFE (Teflon plumber's tape) tape around the lid threads when new.
Also, make sure that the brass threaded nipples and the feed connection nipple (the one with the blue threaded nut) are tight also. Sometimes they will loosen up when new.
The plastic tank material willl take a "Set" after awhile, and should not need retightening.
Never use a threaded plug (like a machine screw) in place of the aluminum filler line plug, because air will leak around the screw threads and cause a flameout. I have seen this happen before. It is better to cap it off with a 6 MM Festo one-way check valve or a Festo 6 MM ball valve.

RE: Leaking UAT, advice please
Hi there,
I think the PTFE tape is only there to stop the top from vibrating loose and does nothing to seal those very loose threads. What may have happened is the safety wire that holds the bag on has scored the sealing lip on the bottle. If you run your finger around the smooth lip on the bottle you will probably feel a scratch and this is where the leak may be coming from. If you clean the kero off the lip on the bottle and the mating part of the cap and then put the thinest layer of 5 min epoxy on the lip and screw it up well it should not leak till you undo it for some reason. Or just get a new bottle.

Hey gordon, that looks just like a UAT bottle[:-]. Nah, can't be, not for a $1.39.

I'm not sure if this place ships internationally but give em a try. They also sell Tygon in any length. The more you buy, the better the discount.

Roger - if you find that PTFE tape does not solve your problem, and you decide that you need a replacement bottle to repair your old UAT - if you can't order one for delivery to the UK, lemme know.
I'd be happy to pop one in the mail to you if you supply your snail-mail address. Note - this is a bare-bones Nalgene bottle only - does not include any of the fittings, innards etc that make up a UAT, so you would need to transfer all of those over from your existing one. I did that recently to deal with an old UAT that got a puncture.

LOL ... A $1+ bottle does not equal a UAT anymore than a $10 roll of Monokote or a $2 sheet of balsa equals a Baby Boomerang.

That's right. There's at least $10.00 to $15.00 worth of fittings, tubing and duck bill material in addition to the bottle. Then you've got to add about $10.00 labor for the 20 to 30 minutes it takes to assemble it. Add in a 200% markup and voila! $65.00 .

most parts are machined and cost a lot
O-rings need to be fuel resistant therefore expensive also.
then there is keeping stock and service and staff.
buy strainers at a 1000 each time otherwise it is not interesting.
then there is the profit left:
then you pay your staf to assemble and test them (15 minutes each)
then you give 60% of the profit to the tax office.
if your self employed ,then you would talk different.
