Hi Ray,

Yup, that's Frank's Drakken. With each flight at TG, he was getting more and more acquainted with it, by the time round 2 came around Frank had it flying like his Avonds 15.
Thanks to Kerry Sterner with his stand-by support of the SimJet Nexus it ran and sounded great.

Been to all the CJs....will be there again this summer (Facet and Eurosport last year...new Gripen this year....so between Frank and me, we'll be the Swedish AF [)].

May see Draken earlier, if there is the usual MSQ or similar scale event, in June, at Gardner. Hope so!

For all us Draken fans who don't have the opportunity to build a magnificent 1/5 scale model such as Frank's there is a somewhat smaller (and slightly less expensive) alternative:

It is a 1/12-scale CNC-cut EDF Draken with wingspan of 31 in and a length of 50 in. I just found out about it and have ordered a kit :-).
Like the Draken itself, the model is manufactured in Sweden by [link=http://www.mbs-rcmodels.se/eng/eng_index.htm]MBS RC Models[/link].
Photo of a partly finished model (not mine):

First I have to say: Wow! What a nice 1/5 model of the Draken. I’m deep impress of the finish and al the work you
have lay down on this model. Looking forward to se more photos of The Draken, now when its painted.

I think I cane say that I’m a Big fan of Draken. When I was a child we have F11 (Flottilj 11 = Wing 11)
in my home town. Every day I saw and hear the Draken in the air.

It’s my 1/12 Draken on the picture a bow. If any one is interested of following the building of Sweepers and my Draken project, log on
at RC Scalebuilder and read more: [link=http://rcscalebuilder.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11273&PN=1]MBS Draken 1/12[/link]

After that I have built this EDF Draken I’m going to start up new Draken project in
1/8 scale whit a turbin.

Red B, if you are wondering about something regarding your 1/12 EDF Draken,
just send me a PM or a mail. Good luck whit Draken.

Hi all Draken people,

Look at the pics, maiden flight of a new moulded swedish fabricated Draken, scale 1:6. It's made up on original dravings.

I also have to add my old Draken pics, scale 1:8. With 237 flights (appr.350 starts and landings), three flame outs during flight, two major engine fires, but it's still alive.

There is a possibility for you to arrange a buy of a Swedish made Draken scale 1:6,5.
It's perfectly correct regarding measurements and design; it's made with a lot of original information. However, there are no panel lines in the moldings.
It can be a good option for the Scandinavians.
Please contact my friend Arne by mail for further information. Photos are available.

Hello fella's

The following are some updated photo's of the Draken.
I've had a year now to improve on the jet and have added numerous details, to include pitot probes and AOA vanes etc..
Also, the jet now has a functional drouge chute system, and a simulated afterburner as well. I have also improved the scale cockpit to actually resemble the real J-35 Draken office.
Please enjoy the following attachment:

Hi Frank,

very very nice at least to say

Your Draken is looking absolutely superb!

Have you got any video footage of your Draken flying?

Alltime happy landings with this beauty

Cheers

Joe C,

The afterburner is a custom design by Andy Low, he is the owner of Electrodynamic.
Andy made a custom set for Bryce Watson during the WJM, and they really looked great.
When I expressed the idea to Andy, all he needed was the actual demensions of the aft tail pipe former to begin.
I have got to admit, no one eles can even come close to his work, they are incredibly bright and have a very realistic soft start as in the full scale Draken.

Hello Thomas,

Thank you, this time I have not had to race like a mad man to finnish prior to competition. I have had a nice relaxed year for many flights and to add to the overall weathering and other scale application.
You can get a look at the Draken at www.rcairgallery.com
Select Video and scroll down about ten, enjoy.

Hi,

Here are some photo's of how I had to fit the Drouge chute system into the Draken.
This is the same system used in the Skymaster F-4, desingned by Dan Gill from www.Details4scale.com
Dan engineered all of the required parts for the Draken, and after several telephone calls back and foruth, we hava a functional system in the Jet.
Very clever programming to mitigate an inadvertant deployment. The system must see four set points to deploy.
1-Thrust lever in Idle during the touch down
2-Speed brake open for the Draken, or flaps for your own application
3-Slight brake-on command from the TX, this allows for touch and go to be perfromed as you will not be using brake for this.
4-Main landing gear wheel RPM

There is also a close-up photo of the afterburner work by Andy Low.

Frank.

Hi Frank, Sweet additions to the Saab!

Question... How will the RX/TX detect main gear RPM to allow chute deployment as one of the 'green light' conditions?.. in other words, whatcha got hooked up to the wheels?

Hey Mike,

Good to hear from you , hope you have weathered the winter months well!
Its good to feel warmer days, not to mention, longer ones to boot!
The following photo's will help ilustrate how the wheel rpm is sensed. There is a magnetic sensor now attached to the starboard main.
There are four strong rare earth magnets now imbeded into the side-wall of the tire equally spaced for balance.
Once the other three parameters are met, the last one- rpm, will be sensed at touch down which will then deploy the chute!
Pretty cool stuff, glad there are guys like Dan Gill at Details4scale that can come up with this for us.
Take care mike,
Frank.

Looking good Frank!!!

Mike,

The wheel has the magnets and the pick up is a Hall Effect sensor. It simply counts the number of times the magnets pass over the sensor to deploy the chute. There is a reset in the programming code that allows for air driven wheel spin in flight so the chute won't deploy in the air. A sensitivity dial sets the wheel ground speed and that's it. Everything about the "Autochute II" is designed to be "hands off" when landing. Just set the Autochute II parameters once for the aircraft and forget about i; the rest is automatic.

Yup, I figured so when Frank mentioned the magnets. Kinda like a governor on a nitro heli's cooling fan.

Good stuff Dan, that's pretty slick! I can't wait to see it in action.

If anyone is interested in seeing Frank's Draken in action, head on over to Radio Control Aircraft Gallery, click on "Jim's Video", and scroll down a bit to "New England Jets, Frank Alvarez - SAAB Draken".

If you have broadband, the HiDef version is worth the download.

Regards,
...jim

PS. Frank, looking forward to Capitol Jets! See you there.

Hello Jim,

Good to hear from you! Seems as though many of our flying bud's are starting to come out of hibernation.
Looking forward to seeing Ann and yourself this year, and as always, you can pick your favorite place on site to camp as you have for the last four years.
Take care Jim, see you guys soon.
Frank.

Mr Alverez I fell in Love with that Draken when i saw you fly it at the 2009 top gun and it is just beautiful and just where did you get the kit and although i like the propeller driven aircraft this is just one that i must have and if I must be taught how to build something that beautiful then so be it but i was wondering if it is possible to build the updated version the viggen J35 saw that in a greate planes book so is it possible for you to let me know how to get one thanks for your time and you should have gotten higher marks at the 2009 top gun they just refused to admit that your build was better and much more artistic than what was being presented thanks Saxman57 My e-mail address is as follows ( [email protected])

Theodore,

Man do I owe you an apology!
I have not admitingly, looked back at this thread for a long time. And only this week did I review my building thread for something and noticed your note.
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner!
If you still have an inquiry about the large J-35 Draken , please do not hesitate to write. This time I will check back more frequently to address your curiosity.
Take care for now,
Frank.

Hey Frank. Sorry to drag up this old thread, but I'm completely in love with that plane. Do you know off hand if they are still being made? I can only seen to find the smaller EDF models online. Any help would be great.

Thanks.
Eric.
