Nicolas,
Can you confirm if the CG point is on the CF spar?
Have you had a chance to fly yours any more?

Regards
Rich

Well mine is very close, it would have flow this past weekend if it wasn't for a small problem with my RAM 500 starter motor, oh well, next weekend it should go!

Took some shots with a Baby Boomerang and a XL so you can see the size difference

I'm thinking of getting one of these. Does it seem to fly similar to a boomer?

Default RE: What do you think of FORMOST 150 ?

Well I have finally flown the Formost after borrowing a Wren 54 MK III from a buddy of mine, I put 3 1/2 flights on it today.

The first flight was HARRY[X(]

I set the CG just aft of the spar......this was way too tail heavy, as the flight progress it became so pitch sensitive that I hand over the transmitter to my buddy Daleroger who has had experience with tail heavy jets before.

We added a extra 6 cell NiMh battery pack for nose weight as far forward on the upper tray as possible.

The next three flights were great.

My spotter (Flyaway) was watching for any abnormal wing flexing, he assured me that the wing looked good through out the flight, so I am now satisfied that the spar and wing modifications are doing there job.

I need to cut a battery hatch underneath the fuse in front of the nose wheel opening to get the batteries as far forward as possible.

I will report on my future flights.

Anybody else flying one yet?

Dale....you left out the part where I got down on my knees and begged you to take the transmitter after a few minutes

You also left out Cliff's "Holy Crap" comments during the whole first flight

Don't know why the Cg problem. My Cg is aft of the spar and it still takes a bunch of down elevator to fly inverted - mid throttle range. OTOH, the airplane is a real handfull at full power and full speed. I rarely go there.

Well I have my Ram 500 running better than new again, it is running so good I decided to give it a face lift

I rearranged both of my batteries in the nose wheel well to shift the CG forward.

I had an issue with my Robart 700 series retracts (Air Up - Spring Down) they collapsed on every landing, I called Robart and they told me that the first production run had bad springs, they said send them in and they will fix under warranty, I just received them back today and the fix was to convert them to Air Up & down, which was fine by me!
Robart's service was great, I mailed them last Friday and got them back in less than a week!

So I hope to fly the Heck out the Formost this weekend.

Rich

Just went over 100 flights today. Found all the retract mounting screws loose today after flying.

Has anyone checked the alignment of the wings, stab and booms. My airplane is surely out of wack in that respect. I haven't checked it closely as I probably really don't want to know the answer, but the trim wanders around all the time.

Yea, amazingly all of the hardware is fine, even my trusty Du-Bro fuel tank!

I had to climb up a 20 foot tree to retrieve one of the wing panels... had to get my digital servo

The First photo shows the fuselage resting against the tree that finally stopped its trajectory, the second photo shows the center section after I pealed away the fiberglass skin, it show the landing gear mods I mad, they were very strong!

I can also tell you that the fiberglass booms were very strong, the split a bit along the seams, the tail feather mounting broke, but I guess thats to be expected.

The fuz traveled about 150 feet through the woods, she was moving!

We burned the remains at our camp fire at out OC-Turbo Fest offering homage to the turbine gods[X(]

Did the "she was moving!" have anything to do with this?? Glad your stuff survived!

I take it you didn't fill the booms with expanding foam.

No I didn't use the foam, I designed a versicle spart that worked great, we took the booms on a table and tried to break the fin off, it was extreamly difficult to do with my spar in place.

The going through the wood was due to a bad hand off of the transmitter... I said do you have it and let go, apparently he didn't!

Ah, the old who's got it trick.....

Thought the problem with the booms was they twisted and broke. I guess I missed the part about putting in a vertical spar. Is that in this thread or, if not, can you say something about it. Like did you split open the boom to install it??

BTW, it looks like Nitro Planes sold out of the Formost, so it may be awhile before you can do it over again. Maybe they'll get in a version 3 with the shear webs installed correctly.

Thud_Driver, I guess I didn't post any photos of the vertical spar when I did it, so here you go, once you put this in the booms are nearly indestructible, unless of course you put them through the woods!
The spar is shown in the bottom of the first photo, the second photo shows the cut out hatch I made in the bottom of the boom to slide the spar in, the spar run parallel to the LE of the fin, about 3/4" back.

I hope this helps

Rich

Default RE: What do you think of FORMOST 150 ?

I loss my formost two saturdays ago when I bashed into a post on my way in for a low pass. Was an judgement error on my part. Mine was not so lucky as the whole thing caught fire when it impacted ground... burnt up most of my stuff, servos, rx, etc......

I had since bought and started assembling a new kit ... it is the latest version ... fuselage is same as RCISFUN's. Wing is of similar construction to the original design as shown in Nicolas's post, two piece short aluminum spar tube, thin balsa upper and lower spar.

Only difference (or improvement) from the first generation wing design is that it now comes with flaps (~1/3 the original aileron length) and the balsa shear webs had been replaced with lite ply webs.

Rich: Sorry to hear about the loss of your formost...

Ok, if I get this right, your spar goes up into the fin and anchors to the boom.
