RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
I have one (SM F-86 1/6.5) that is about two years old now. Yes the turbine rails are not right; I had to raise the front about 3/8 inch. I did this with wedges. I set the balance and troughs as per manual and if fly’s fine at these settings. I also had a new pipe built so I could move the turbine as far forward as possible, so I would not have to add a lot of nose weight.

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
Guys, can anyone post a picture of the rear end of the saddle tanks? Would like to see where they are sitting in the fuselage, how much clearance is between them and the fuselage root rib and also what is the distance between the two saddle tanks in the middle of the fuse? I want to locate my turbine but I don't want to interfere with the tanks. My tanks haven't arrived yet...should ship next week (unless someone has an extra set of the 3 tanks?). I want to locate my turbine so I can get my pipe made and hopefully it will arrive at the same time as the tanks.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
I have my tanks against the bulkhead, there is about 1/4 inch clearance between the tanks at best.
Clearance between the turbine and the tanks is shall i say minimal.... i have 1/2 a bypass between the turbine and the tanks but i feel that this is not needed as it is only the front 2 inches of the turbine is covering the main tanks. You can use a heat shield that you get from a speed shop to deflect the heat away from the tanks.
The F-86 needs a lot of nose weight no matter what you do, my plane balanced with the cockpit and a 1/6 figure and 8 oz. of lead. the plane flies great with a Jet Central eagle turned down to 24 lbs. I have close to 100 flights on her and she will slow down nicely for landings.
With the power i have she is a 150 to 160mph easily.
Sean bring your bird to Hamburg one weekend and fly with us, PM me and i will send you my cell number if you have additional questions.

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
Alan,
These are the dimensions I was inquiring about. Reason I'm asking is that my model currently has BVM EZ air in the root for the gear/brakes, and some D-9 connectors for the flap/aileron servo. Just wonder if they will interfere with the tanks and should be reworked. Total pain as they are already in and have proved to work in flight, etc.
I'm lookinng at having the front turbine mount right at that bulkhead and so the turbine may fit up in between the tanks a little. Good suggestion on a little heat sheild in there.

Hello Sean,
yes - sorry - that will be a problem. The tanks sit right down in that corner. I have just some room between it to run some pressure lines. That's it. Width between the tanks is: 107 mm (4 1/4 Inch)
Cheers, Martin

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
Sean,
I believe you could. However my feeling is that you're trying to avoid some extra work at the expense of optimal configuration. We heard a lot about nose heavyness and so on. Now if you move those tanks further forward of the c/g - wouldn't be such a good idea. If I were you I'd rather change the air system!
Mind you I am going to dismantle mine again quite a bit as well. Why? because I am not satisfied with the landing gear operation. Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not work. I believe there is a leakage in one of the pistons which tells me a story about the piston quality as such. I think I'll replace the landing gear alltogether. Either Behotec or even fully electric. I hate air pressure systems anyhow. So unreliable! some electric actuators in lieu of thecylinders anda couple of neat, small, strong servoes on the doors - and bang - a totally reliable system! And what with all the nose weight needed: no problem to install larger batteries. this way I will be able to cycle the landing gear 100 times during one flight if I so chose....
the Bonanza that I have flown has an electric system and it has never failed me (I obviously live to tell the story... ;-) )
Will be a while before she flies, I guess...
Cheers, Martin

Martin,
If needed could I slide those saddle tanks fwd 2'' ok?
That would allow me to leave the lines and push the turbine fed a little more.
The turbine is 4.5'' in dia.

There is a 3/4 inch clearance between the lower edge of the tank and the side of the fuse, the pics show all other measurements.

Sean a larger third tank will be beneficial depending on your power plant
with the three tanks i am getting 6 min flights with my Super eagle set to 24 lbs. The F-86 is now in for an overhaule... new paint and some minor repairs.

What turbine are U using? I am planning to use a Rabbit 100 so I still don´t know If i will need too much nose weight. If thats the case where did you get your new pipe?

The pipe I had built was a UKR-JET pipe. It is a work of art, welded seam.

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
Wrapped up my install today. It didn't need any extra non-essential weight to balance the airframe with the tanks empty and CAT full. I was able to adjust the ECU lipo location on top of the inlet duct to get the correct balance. Balanced dry except CAT full, it weighs exactly 22 lbs. With the wing tanks on it's 22 lbs 11 oz.
Here are a few pics. Ready to remaiden in the next couple weeks.

RE: F-86 Skymaster - RC installation??
I did not have that luck, my airplane have a P100 on it, a 2300mah A123 rx battery on the nose, a 9.9v A123 for the ECU on the nose as well and even like this i had to put 570 grams ( 20,1 oz ) of lead on the nose!
Needless to say how mad I´m with this scenario...

The P100 should be lighter than my J66, which is just over 3lbs.
The answer perhaps is to move your turbine fwd and get a longer pipe, or maybe have an extension rolled for the back?
My pipe is 30.5" long and was made by Gary of jet tech fuel tank fame.
