I think we are now just trashing about wildly and ignoring the obvious:

My observations:

90% of the aircraft at the event were using JetCat turbines. Only four, if my number is correct, had radio issues on six flights. If the problem was static, which would be pretty much universal, why didn't more JetCat powered aircraft have the same problem on more flights? I couldn't begin to count the total # of JetCat powered flights performed over the weekend without incident.

All three aircraft that reported radio lockouts, had similar flight parameters at the time of the incident. LOW, FAST, DISTANT, & either close to or beyond the POWER LINES.

All three pilots were flying behind the pilot stations at the time of the incidents.

Not to dissuade anyone's scientific contentions contributed in previous posts, but I've always believed that "If it looks like a Duck, quacks like a Duck, & walks like a Duck" odds are pretty strong it's a DUCK!

I've watched the videos posted and noted that very few of the pilots were actually flying from directly behind the metal pilot stations. Most were off to the side or a few feet back from them. I know personally, I rarely stood right behind them. All these flights were without incident.

The solution seems simple. Don't stand directly behind the pilot stations and if you do, don't fly low over or beyond the power lines. 98% of the pilots wittingly or not, followed that process and had a great weekend of flying without incident. Does it really have to be any more complex than this?

Very well said Dave. You really summed it up perfectly. I'm with you and look forward to next year. I was lucky and had no issues, but I can accept the explanations and warnings for next time. I think we've beat this horse to death...'nuff said?

Static electric discharge is what I would be looking into. Was everyone using additive??
Did these jets crash due to engine cut-out or lack of radio control? Were they equipped with Jetcat turbines?

The effect of static on Jetcat ECU's is well known. I have never heard if it effecting the radio system or non-Jetcat ECU's.

Joe
Joe that may have affected flame outs but not RX lockouts. Don't know the ratio between those types of failures here though.

Well, at least we can rule out the lack of grass being the issue Andy.

Hey guys... In case you were wondering (just in case).... I had ZERO, I REPEAT ZERO lockouts on the heli (S) but I did have a flame out not due to static, but rather vibration as it rattled the throttle linkage loose... .... LOL....[sm=tongue_smile.gif] I don't even think I could see it if I flew it out past the power lines...

Thanks John for your analysis, but I think it's important to correct one thing. One of the engine out crashes did not fit the profile of flying low with improper antenna orientation behind the barricade. There was an F-16 that shut down and didn't make it back to the runway and the pilot was not standing behind the barricade, had his antenna oriented properly, and was not low. No numbers on the flight log were available because of a power shutdown, but the ECU's last shutdown recorded a "failsafe 2.1 seconds". I don't know if there is any other scenario where a failsafe is recorded in the ECU besides loss of signal/radio hold, so I am assuming that is what happened.
