Default SM MIG-29 Maiden

Hi Guys, yesterday I maidened my new Skymaster MIG-29 OVT. What an amazing jet, I must say this is one of the easiest jets I have flown, very stable and controled at all times. For power I used a Rhino which produces more than enough for the MIG, excelent verticals and top speed. Flight time can be around 7 minutes with enough fuel for a 3-4 go arounds.
Being the first flights and also since I am not a 3D guy I took it slow and did some simple tests with the Vector Thrust activated and all I can say is WOW, the MIG can do some very interesting things with the VT.
Landings are incrediblly easy, when you lower flaps the MIG puts in an atitude where you basically need to control power for landing.

Well here are a few pics and a video... hope you enjoy it... Michel

Congrats Michel ! I've strongly considered the MiG 29 to go along with my SU-27 . I really miss the beautiful Santiago skyline . I may be back down this winter . Rumour has it that the 777 ( my airplane ) will be doing the route starting in December !

Way to go Michel! Looks great.

Do you believe that the landing gear mounts are stout enough for the MiG to be flown off of grass on a regular basis?

Thanks guys... I hope to have some more VT action video soon, I will keep posting here.

Marc, it would be great to have you back here again... Regarding the MIG, two words... GET ONE... you will not regret it, this jet fly's very well.

Mike, the gear mounts seems to be very strong, also the landing gear has great shock absortion capabilities, my guess is if you grass runway is of good quality you will have no problems.

Hi Michel,

Congratulations!!! I told you so. Skymaster have made a very complex jet uncomplicated with excellent characteristics including a well engineered landing gear.

Hope you have many more great flights

Cheers

Thanks Morne, and you have too see how that landing gear works, absolutely a piece of art... We instaled the EVSD-5U valve from Airpower and the landing gear moves perfect, slow and scale... I will try to get a video of that.
The VT system is perfect, very simple to asemble and it works great.

George, sorry my friend I completely forgot about your request... But I see you understad why... I will have the info for you this week.

Michel,
thanks for the great post and the video. I am just about finished with mine and had a few questions:
- The aluminum actuating arm for the right side elevator hits the side of my pipe. the pipe also touches the bottom of the fusealge. A freind had to raise his engine by 3/8' and positioned pipe behind engine former to fix this issue. Did you have the same problem, how did you deal with that?
- I decided to plumb my tanks in series, (left to right to header to UAT) since the height difference between two main tanks and the header tank may cause uneven suction and higher chance of air bubbles. any thoughts?
- do you know what is the final weight?
- I didnt seem to need to put any weigth (batteries) in the nose cone to balance. Looks like batteries need to go near the header tank to balance. how did yours balance?
- any other tricks you used or install pictures would be appreciated.
thanks
Jason

Hi Jason I also have one of the arms slightly touching the pipe, there should be no probkem with that.
-I added some BVM heat paint and some aluminum tape to the area where the pipe touches the fuselage. You may also add some ceramic blanket for even more protection.
-I plumbed the tanks per instructions, the two mains toghether going to the center tank. I haven't had any problems with the tanks and the sytem works ok. Be sure to have the exact same lenght of tubing between the main tanks. My main concern is that the main tanks are quitre big and with your setup you will have quite a change in balance of the jet.
-Regarding balance try to put as much as posible back as this jet is very nose heavy, I had to add over 600 grams on the tail to balance mine and I installed everything as back as posible.

Tell me is your MIG an OVT version or regular? I have some extra tips for the OVT system.

If you wish send me an email to [email protected] you will have a faster response that way.

I will take some installation pics on thursday and post them here for everyone to see.

Hi guys

I had the same problems:

1º - the aluminum actuating arm for the left and right side elevator hits the side of my pipe - TRY TO TURN A LITTLE THE ARM

2º - pipe touches the fuselage. USE CERAMIC BLANKET FROM BVM.

3º - gear doors toutch in tanks - USE DREMEL TO INCREASE THE WOOD WALL AND USE EPOXY TO FIX THE TANK

4º - cockpit should be longer - USE BLACK PLATE TO ADD TO THE FRONT OF COCKPIT

5º - is not possible to center the tail pipe cause if you center can´t fix to the OVT - I HOPE THAT HAD NO PROBLEM IN FLIGHT!

6º - the servos recomended can not be used in the wings - PUT THIN SERVOS

I had no problems with tank and balancing!

EVERY PROBLEMS ARE EASY SOLVED AND IT´S GREAT PLANE!

Joao I installed the batteries underneath the cockpit and even then the MIG came nose heavy. Do a check on your CG to be sure you will not add to much weight to the tail. I ended up with aprox 650 grams on the tail to balance mine.

It is a very stable jet, I was very impressed how easy it is to fly and landings are a no problem event with this one. I also like very much the scale flight you get with a 36lbs engine. I didn't want to get a hovering unnatural type of jet, I wanted a really scale type of performance and I think it is perfect...
