Default Here's an idea for Futaba and JR.

Inspired by the "Perfect Radio" thread I did a super quick photoshop drawing of an idea I have had for a while.

I should probably patent it, but not worth the hassle :-) Hopefully when it becomes a product, the manufacturer will remember that they saw it here firs and send me a radio lol

What we really need is a detachable touchscreen module that can be detached from the transmitter and handed to our caller.

The module would be the size of the current screen, and would slide on and off the transmitter. The detachable screen has it's own rechargeable battery that automatically charges when the transmitter is charging. The communication between screen and transmitter would probably be bluetooth.

Imagine the possibilities! You hand the screen to your caller. He can watch the timer, do required trim changes, check battery indicator, fine tune mixes

But, where it really shines is when 2way telemetry is integrated. Now he has speed, fuel quantity, GPS info, altitude, G-meter, RX and turbine battery voltage. Heck even a mode to switch to in-flight camera.

The technology is already here. Nothing needs to be invented

And with Bluetooth onboard, it would also be possible to beam the same info to a smartphone, iPhone, Droid, iPad, laptop...

The interface would have to have an inflight mode so the caller can't change vital parameters, but only do required small trim changes for mixes and not cause a crash.

My caller would probably be so busy using that screen to watch adult movies, that he's be paying no attention to me or the traffic that he is supposed to be watching out for !

Just add another caller in your case Gordon. One to look at the screen and on to look at the plane and traffic. Plus, I don't think the first revision will have pay per view and internet connection [8D]

Excellent idea- In reality it should only add about 20 dollars to the manufacturing costs. Scotty

There's your answer right there. Put a Bluetooth in the transmitter and have an I-phone app that can display the parameters. That way the host device (transmitter) stays in tact. One problem that comes to mind tho is bluetooth is I think 2.4 ghz.

I want my caller to be looking out for other traffic full size or otherwise and any pedestrians or horse's, not looking at my remote screen, anyway if you fly a jet you should be able to do your own trimming and playing with mix's whilst in flight what a brilliant idea!!!!!!!

Your caller would not be looking at the screen all the time. It takes a second to glance down and scan the info. I personally do my own trimming, but many pilots have their callers do that. Matter of preference. Playing with mixes, read my post 2

Paul, my initial thought was like you said, adding Bluetooth only, but then you will have the discussion if cellphones are safe on the flight line. A detachable screen would also not require to go through the connection process like you would every time you wanted to bind a new smartphone.

Bluetooth has proven extremely solid, so I doubt it would interfere with the 2.4 system of the transmitter.

It would also be really neat to have a detachable screen in the shop when setting up the transmitter. Walk around with the screen and leave the transmitter on the table.

Yep, and with the new iPhone 4, one could multi-task while setting up or adjusting a models flight control parameters post-flight, and still make a call after being the caller.

Guess all we need now is an app, and wait in line to get the phone.

KEWL!!

You could, if you're quick enough, order replacement part for your jet before it even hits the ground.

GREAT IDEA... The system will be set up so the second your bounce your Kingcat, an order for new flex plates is dispatched to BVM for express shipping

Or, as soon as a pilot gets his JetJoe to run, an email is instantly dispatched to the Vatican with proof of a miracle.[>:][>:] Flame suit tightly zipped

Good idea John, and it would be your choice if you wanted to detach the screen or not, but at least you have the option.

Just think - if Futaba made the same kind of mistake with this as they did with the Zero GID/UUID on their FASST systems, your caller could be reprogramming the trims, mixing, servo direction etc of the guy in the adjacent flight station instead of on your radio !! Could be quite entertaining.

Bluetooth operates in the Unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific, & Medical) part of 2.4G between 2402 and 2480 MHz and shouldn't conflict with our radios at all.

NASA Rules, and giant scale, caller is not aloud to touch the transmitter in any way while the Pilot has it in flight. that goes for trim adjustments also. if he does he get a big 0 for the score for that round

I just seen that Spektrum announced the new DX8 and some of the things we now want in R/C radios are in that unit. I see no pricing or availablity yet but I'm sure it won't be long.

John, the manufacturing cost would only go up like 20 bux like scotty said-BUT THEY WOULD CHARGE ANOTHER G FOR THE SYSTEM!

Good idea but I don't think I would ever use this. I would not want someone to touch my trims while I fly. And the timer beeps anyhow...

Or in the case of JR/Speky they could swamp your two channels and put both planes in the dirt ............... bwahahahaha

Hi John-

Interesting concept, a remotely controlled remote control. As stated a few comments earlier this may cause some problems in competition circles. Especially when the "caller" is a poolshark standing 20 feet away with full contol of the airplane.

It is really no problem with competitions. Just leave the touch screen module in the transmitter during those... Problem solved

The trim option is something I think a lot of pilots would like. Simply judging from the number of people I fly with, I'd estimate that 25% asks their caller for "2 clicks down or "give me a couple of right clicks". Especially during maiden flights, I see many pilots relying on their caller for adjustments. Like I said, I personaly don't want anyone touching my trims, but this would probably be a sub menu anyway that you would open or leave locked.

Bluetooth will not shoot down your own plane or the person standing next to you. Several people fly with a bluetooth enabled phone or earpiece activated. No problem there.

But, as stated earlier, the real usefulness of this idea is when telemetry info from the plane is displayed. That's a feature I'd be willing to pay extra for.
