Modified Ziroli Turbinator
I wanted a first jet that would be easy to fly, yet have some scale presence. It seems there is nothing currently available to meet that need, so I built my own. By making some modifications to a Ziroli Turbinator I was able to come up with a plane that retains the good flying characteristics of the Turbinator, but has the look of a TS-11 Iskra 200BR. Most of the mods were to change the appearance and included: Rounded the lines out in many places, changed canopy, hatch, and nose, raised the wing up 1/2" and added a belly pan for the intake, modified the tail shape, reduced the rudder and vertical stab size, and added split flaps instead of the standard flaps shown on the plans. I finished the plane in plain solartex fabric and painted it. Retracts are Robarts made for the Top Flight Bonanza. I won't go into all of the equipment I used right now, but I chose the 19lb thrust Jet Central Rabbit for power. After over thirty flights I can say that the jet is everything I had hoped it would be. It flies great and looks very scale. Top speed does not exceed the airframe at about 140mph. It slows down very nicely for landing and has great slow flight characteristics. Here is a link to my 32nd flight on Youtube and some photos.

For those interested here are some construction details. One photo shows how I built up on the original frame to round out the top of the fuse and the hatch. In another you can see the addition of balsa to the standard ply construction to provide a more rounded appearance. I included a photo showing the original vertical stab shape and size compared to my reduced and slightly re-shaped vertical stab to give the Iskra look. The stock stab was very large. The photo of the underside shows the added belly pan. Some of the intake air goes over the wing, and some goes under. On the stock Turbinator all air goes over the wing.

Very clever! My son and I are going to build a Turbinator as well and were planning on rounding the fuselage shape too. We might also add just a bit of rake to the tail surfaces to give it a more streamlined look. Thanks for the info. on how you did yours. Looks great!

Can you post a picture of the full scale TS-11 Iskra 200BR. Since I am not familiar with it I would like to see the comparison.
A friend of mine has a "Scale" jet trainer in the works but not close to flying. I have a Boomerang and thought someone should do a "scale" trainer jet that is as easy to fly as the Boomerang.

Here it is, the real thing (there was only one and it now sits outside a museum in Poland). I hate to do this, since it shows the differences between my "semi-scale" jet and the real one. Unless I show this photo, few know how accurate my plane really is.

Do you have any more construction pics and info ???
Cheers Jeremy.
