Fox Composite Typhoon

Well as your recall earlier this year i got my hands on the only Fox composite Typhoon that came off the production line as far as i know, at the time it was painted as an 11 Squadron machine.
The model itself has never flown an has only partly, well very partly been built, well at long last work is well underway, first thing to do was remove all the paint as it was starting to come off all over, appears no primer was put on and the shell was not keyed sufficent for the paint to stick on well enough.

So how the hell do i remove every bit of paint off a model this size can't use paint strippers, so after twenty two hours of rubbing with 240 wet and dry, both wings, canards, control surfaces and a few other bits were done, lost a bit of the detail in places but nothing major that can't be replaced.

These have all now been primed, plan is to get everything primed then build it, then strip back down to put the final paint scheme on which at this moment in time is planned to be ZK061 which is a Saudi one that i photographed low level in Wales, would really love an RAF one but all over battleship grey doesn't do it for me.

I've also removed all the flight controls as the hinges had quite alllot of movement in then, these will be replaced with Robart hinges.

Yesterday i started on the fus, took one look at it and thought about the 40+ hours of rubbing down that lay ahead of me, but then when looking at how much scale detail is on it got very concerned about loosing it all when rubbing down, lol it was at this point i notice a tin of cellouse thinners in the workshop so i thought sod it lets just try a litle on the underside in case it goes wrong, well don't you just love hindsight, hour n half later and 70 % of fus perfectly strippped down of paint and all panel detail still visible, thats really where im at at the moment hope to get the fus in primer over the next few days, then will start putting her all together, having major debate as to engine choice at the moment, size and make.

At last starting to make progress, boring stuff cleaned up the old hinges ready for the new ones, will be using 4.5mm Robart hinges

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...a1965/R7-1.jpg

Servo mounts finally arrived Jr 8411 for elevators and Hyperions on other flight controls

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...a1965/R8-1.jpg

Right the pain in the ass was always going to be the wings and associated bits, fuz should be very straight forward, the retracts only just fit or so i thought, turns out the doors
won't close with the leg retracted, so i've cut out a recess and will cover in due course

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...a1965/R9-1.jpg

Ignore the elastic band thats part of the research and development program :D, how to get the door to open with the leg in such a small space, so that its in the right place when open and closed, anyway rather than try to explain after many many attempts got it sorted, now just got to make the assembly fit together in a proper professional looking way that works,
hopefully the pictures will sort of explain

Progress still being made, one of those weeks when not allot to see in appearance but lots of fiddly stuff sorted, both retract door linkages now all sorted, covers put on the doors and lots of 3M applied to all the imperfections, also glued in all the servo mounts and drilled out all the old hinge pins ready for the new robart hinges.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...za1965/R15.jpg

The model has allot of nice scale features one of which is the gun pod mounted on the right side of the fus over the wing, a little bit of work and its now hysoled in place with lots of bits holding it in place
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...za1965/R16.jpg

So what with the camera mount and gun pod i noticed that the refuelling probe was represented by just a recess in the fus
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...za1965/R17.jpg

Made a paper template then set about sanding a piece of basla to about the right shape, that to is now clamped and glued in place, reference was used by a shot i took two weeks ago :D

RE: Fox Composite Typhoon

Well bit of progress to report, very little been done since Christmas due to family illness, i left off with the refuelling cover being glued on, this took lots of sanding and priming till i was happy with it, also now got the decals from Ralle in Germany, thankyou Ralle, paint is on order from the States where the colours have been mixed to order (Klass Kote).

One thing i wasn't happy with was the two grills either side of the fuz just above the leading edge of the wing, these were represented by mouldings in the gel coat, so i rubbed those away and using pictures i've taken and other examples draw some up on the computer in Illustrator then feed through the vinyl plotter to make two negative paint masks, before placing on the model and cutting out i glassed on two carbon cloth pieces inside the fus to strengthen up the panel for the grills, have now completed one side, made a slight error with the angle so will rectify (bottom part of the panel) and make sure the angles correct on the N/S.

Also in the picture you can see a wood strip, this is to simulate the slightly rasied panel that the night formation marker strip is placed on (well thats what i was told there for).

Well its been a while but at last progress, prepration seemed to take forever in a day, plus waiting for the paint to come from Klass Kote USA special order, cheers Mike, anyway weekend saw me finally get the main colour on, today used 11.5mm soft edge tape and applies the blue grey, got to be honest really pleased so far still got the radardone leading edges of the canards and tailfin to do, plus the aluminum and tailpipes, followed by lots of decals from Ralle.

Big thanks to Phil Clarke for some great advice

Lots still to do but serious progress at last, sorry about pic quality but taken on iphone

TBH with you Marc im not even flying what i got so i'll just wait, this is going to be used between the F16 and the Typhoon so one pipe one connector is an attractive insentive to go for it

Cool then, keep up the great work.
I'm with you on the simplicity of installation, and I still have one on order but my time frames might require alternatives.
