Clearcoat
I am painting a 106" wingspan Extra IMAC airplane. I am posting on the Jet forum because I know you guys paint. Very few IMAC flyers build and almost none paint except for cowls and wheel pants. I used PPG K36 prima, and Omni MBC basecoat. In the past I used PPG DAU75 Delclear as my clearcoat. I also used Omni MC161 clear. I am interested in keeping the plane at a reasonable weight.
I am wondering what you guys are using for a Clearcoat nowdays? Thanks, Jim DeYoung |
RE: Clearcoat
MC161 baby! And lots of elbow grease. I wetsand upto 2000 grit and then use a 6" buffing wheel with 3M Perfect it!
Works for me. |
RE: Clearcoat
I use PPG 2021 with the DFX11 accelerator. i thin about 3 times what they recommend. the faster hardener will prevent stuff/dust from setting in and allows to dry faster since I thin it more. I thin it like this so that I can put it on thin, have it flow, no orange peel. i also keep a small touch-up gun ready to go with retarder, so if you get it too thin and it does not look wet enough or you get some overspray, the retarder sprayed with a light coat will help wet and get it to flow, but it dries quick, to typically no runs, unless you over-do it. If you do it right, it will look like it was buffed.

RE: Clearcoat
HI, they have not sold MC 161 for a couple of years now, I use Omni MC270, it is very thin, but you can easily still add 25% reducer. I use a Satta gun, the gun makes all the difference.

RE: Clearcoat
MC260 and 270 is not available anymore in many states, the new VOC compliant Omni clear is MC262. Anyway, check out this thread I did with my firebird, it talks about clear coating, and all stages of prep through polishing. Hope it helps. I cannot recommend reducing paints beyond what the manufacture recommends, I don't agree with it, but to each their own.
