Wing Tubes

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, looking for 2 things, info on how wing tubes are standing up to their job, personal experience , would be good.
Secondly, a supplier of 2mm, 30mm dia. Aluminum tubing.
When I look at a Comp. Arf Lighting, I like their 40mm. tubing, going 13' into the wing, looks good.
What I don"t like is a Jet that is twice the weight, using 30mm/1mm alum. tubing, going only 8' into the wing. I will try to find a supplier, selling 2mm. thick wall, plus I'll get a longer tube.
What do you guys think, I'm being too cautious

RE: Wing Tubes

Rcpete, I use this aluminum for my Jetmach kits. The tube goes 18"' into each wing.

FYI, each tube size will fit inside the other

Pete,
I get all my Aluminum Tube from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. I make my wing sockets from 2" fiberglass tape wrapped over the tube with a wax paper barrier between the glass and the tube. West System resin brushed on and I get the exact tube and socket I need.

Try www.tntlandinggear.com, they have a nice selection of T6 Alu and Composite wing tubes with and without sockets.

HI Ron, your method sounds great for future projects.
Right now, I need a metric==================- Aluminum=============== tube replacement.
Thanks Rcpete

RE: Wing Tubes

Wall thickness dos'nt mean it will be better, the spec of the tube is what you want, a thin walled 6061 or 6082 is much better than a lower spec with a thick wall.

6061 and 6082 are used to build ultralight's, another way of increasing the strength again used a lot in ultralights is to fit one tube inside the other. Two light, thin walled tubes here will be extremly strong.

Pete,

I ordered a replacement tube for the ME 262 we're building (from the 1/4 scale French kit - the wing tubing came up missing) from Parker Steel:

http://www.metricmetal.com/products/rdalum_tube.htm

Its 6061 tubing and they have it in various sizes and wall thicknesses - all in metric only...
