Tamjets Smoke System

...never mind, it's all good...

Tam is my boy. He's been good to me. I buy his stainless smoke tubes and I buy my smoke pumps from great planes.

Tam is very helpful. I did have one of his pumps back in the day and I remember just using a multiplex connector to y to the ECU pack and the pump was already soldered in.

Dont hook it up backwards or you will burnout the ESC.
I am assuming you never looked at the instruction. There is a big diagram showing the polarity.

Is there is a problem with the manual?

tamjets 02-28-2011 02:18 PM

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

Now my turn to rant you out.

1. The multiplex ESC had been discontinues many years back. I had to make my own ESC. This version we been selling over 3 years now. If you miss understood. Sorry and it not my fault.

2. If you can't soldering the simple ultra dean connector any to any batteries source you are using. Well, that is your lack of experience. No my fault.

3. The instruction manual on second page clear showing the ESC with diagram which is posititive and negative. It also show the wire to your RX.

4. You bought from DreamWorks and he should take care of it.

I had the right to rant you out on this one.....[:@]

Did you get this diagram in your package?

If not, here's how it get's wired.

A 'Y' harness is not really needed, just tap the appropriate leads to the proper polarities of the ECU power source.

the phone number and address are posted across the bottom of the homepage Tamjets.com did not take to much effort to find. the basic instructions were plenty to setup my smoke pump.

Fair enough. So...I guess that covers it. I appreciate all the helpful inputs. I'll make it work.

I had the diagram and still did it backward.. [:@] Had to send it back to tam to fix. Great service by the way. I love my tams smoke system

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

OK...after looking at the instructions again, I get it. I see what the circle that is labeled "ESC" is supposed to be. From what I can tell via the diagram, it looks like the male prong on the back of the pump is the negative pole, and the female receptacle is the positive. Do I have that correct?

BTW, I am looking forward to getting the system up and running. I have heard nothing but good stuff about Tam's system.

Here is little note.
The ESC is showing the negative the pin sticking out and the positive is female.

When you soldering the power lead.
Make sure the pin sticking out is positive and the negative is female.

I had dozen of guys soldering according to the ESC diagram and burn out the ESC.

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

Thanks Tam.

Question: I think I read a post somewhere about using only one smoke tube/spray bar. The reasoning was that one bar will give enough smoke, and will not use up the smoke oil as fast as having two smoke tubes installed. Supposedly this will allow for more 'smoke on' time. Is this true? FYI, I am using this system with a Jetcat P-70.

Also, it is going to be impossible for me to keep the smoke pump 6 inches away from some type of electrical device, as is recommended by the instructions. I can get it away from the ECU and RX antennas (R6014HS rx), but a battery and servo leads will be less than 6 inches away. Is this going to be trouble?

Thanks

tamjets 03-01-2011 08:44 AM

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

Even I recomending 6" away from RX. But had run few set up closer than that without issue.
If you can. Do not let any servo extension wires near the pump motor.

Ok, looks like I've got my work cut out for me trying to find a good spot for the pump. Is 6 inches from a battery crucial?

No. Tam's recommedations are very conservative. I suppose there may be situations where it might make a difference but I've seen these pumps put in all sorts of locations and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Take a look at one of his pumps in my KingCat....close to lots of stuff and wires running everywhere with no problems.

Just make sure you do a good range test while switching the pump on/off.

FYI, I might suggest a seperate battery. It only takes a size AAA 6 cell/720 mah for a days worth of flying. Keeps the smoke system completely separate from the other electrics.

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

Thanks Craig. I also noticed the smoke tubes do not have a barb on them. Do I need to solder one on?

tamjets 03-01-2011 10:49 AM

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

The smoke tube never had one tubin came off.
You can safety wires just for peach of mind.

VF84sluggo 03-01-2011 10:57 AM

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

Yes, I'll safety wire. I was just wondering if there would be a problem with any smoke fluid seepage/leak since there is no barb on the tube. Any thoughts on using just one smoke tube?

BTW, I did re-route my servo leads away from the pump, but one of my rx battery packs is about 3 inches away from the smoke pump.

tamjets 03-01-2011 11:24 AM

RE: Tamjets Smoke System

2 is better. Just tune down the pump.

Tam...FYI, I'm thinking of using a "special green bottle" for my smoke tank in your honor! Will you sign it (the green bottle, that is) for me when I see you next time???:D
