A10 ordnance help

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys

I received a load of ordnance for an A10 I'm building the only problem is its all in white gelcoat. I know what some of the stuff is but not sure on the pod thing and fuselage ordnance plus I'm short on pictures etc... so any help would be gratefully received. Ideally close up pictures and a few side views would be good.

Here's what I have to paint and the info I've got so far.

Many thanks

Alex

Here it is loaded up. Too late to install hard points in the fuz as the fuel tanks have been installed etc... so these pylons will have to be glued on.

I believe the pod is the FLIR pod for the Mavericks. Usually has the same color as the plane or white, but don't quote me on it. More people will definitely chime in though.

Heres a couple, you can see the FLIR in the first pic and the second was too cool not to post.

Please tell me that huge centre line tank will be easy to remove? I can see that making a noticeable difference to the way this thing flies.
Lets be hoping that I never have to belly this bad boy [:@]

Yeah Ali, I was never a fan of the huge centerline tank either. Ever since I saw it on Ron Long's A-10 it just looks out of place!

Skip the fuselage stuff, too crowded with it [:'(]

I can't believe that the ordnance came unpainted. What's up with that; how many ways are there to paint a Sidewinder? More importantly, who is to blame for this disaster?

You need to send a sharp email of reprimand to your supplier and ask him if the paint was cancelled on eBay, or if fell off when the ordnance was being shipped via Cyprus, or if the shipment to Cyprus was cancelled then the paint must have gotten lost in transit to Sweden. Either way, it's probably Ali's fault since the guy takes a maximum of 10 hours to answer his email regardless of time of day or wherever he is in the world.

I suggest that you start a new thread and slap the crap out of everybody. Apparently that's how it's done here these days on RCU. OMG, my head just exploded!!!!!:D:D:D

Of the ordinance in the pics there is only the pave penny on the forward fuselage (no litening pod) and the ECM pod looks to be the AN/ALQ-184 short version.

Thanks for the help guys :)

lol, that would be me for agreeing to paint this stuff, we knew it was going to be like this I just didn't realize what a huge job it was going to be.

A couple of screws and it pops off the rest are held on like your MIBO one. Does this mean I can chuck it in the bin as I'm not much of a fan of the fuz stuff. The pylons and ordnance weigh 2.5kg so [X(] Like you say there's going to be a significant difference in flight characteristics not to mention that massive belly tank.

I'll take some pictures of each piece later today, haven't found any info on the rocket pods.

Thanks again

Alex

I think we can lose the centre line drop tank.... My thoughts are exactly the same as Ian's in that I dont like the way it looks ( does not suit the aircraft) I also think then it wont look so fussy underneath!
Regards Al

Jim.. Thanks for the comical take on what RCU seems to have become of late! It did make me chuckle.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... No red Sidewinders for me please! They always remind me of a dummy weapon when they paint them this colour.. Having said that, I might have red winders fitted to my cougar for some reason

RE: A10 ordnance help

Do you want all the fuz pylons glued on? or just the outer two?

I've got some pre painted sidewinders I'm going to use and these are the standard white/grey.

Cheers

RE: A10 ordnance help

it's only the centre line drop tank that I want to leave off. The pylons may as well go on.
Are you sure the other sidewinders are the same size/scale?

RE: A10 ordnance help

Oh well, just trying to get out of some work...

I'm hurt, would I ever give you something that's not to the correct scale ;)

I knew it :D
Lets not talk about the Hawk APU that was running on chalk ;)

RE: A10 ordnance help

Lol, got a bit carried away with that one and vowed never to drink and build again.

Anyway the chalk stain was the correct length :)

RE: A10 ordnance help

Hi Alex,
My name is Karl. I spent 10 years in the US Air Force. I worked as a weapons systems specialist on the A10. In other words, I loaded the weapons on the A10-A. I noticed that you painted your A-10 in the European scheme. This paint scheme was primarily used prior to Desert Storm. After Desert Storm these were converted to the Gray scheme. This will affect your ordinance colors too. For example your fuel tank will be the same Green you used. Also the AIM-9 launcher, your AGM-65 launcher and ECM Pod will be green also. Your Air to Air ordinance will be the light Grey. The Air to Ground ordinance will be green. If you notice, all weapons have a color band on it. This band will determine the type of munition. A blue band is for inert ordinance, in other words non explosive. A yellow band is high explosive. Also where certain weapons were placed is important. There are alot of different options. You will need to do some research. Air to Air munitions are usually outside the wheel well pods. ECM or AIM-9 will be on stations 1 or 11. One other note, fuel tanks were only used during cross country missions. I am not aware of anytime fuel tanks are used in combat. Think of it this way, anything that stays on the airplane, ECM pod, launchers can be on the aircraft during cross country missions. Weapons, only in training and combat.

Karl

Hi Karl

Thanks for posting, really useful information! I'll take some pictures of all the ordnance I've got and describe how I'll paint them, if anyone sees any glaring errors let me know as I'm not entirely sure what's correct and what's not yet.

Thanks

Alex
