Skymaster Mig29 with P200

I am assembling a Mig 29 right with a P200 shoe horned into it and am wondering from those who have done this how they went about it. I have the turbine mounted and set but the problem I am running into is the pipe. The stock pipe is too long and does not seem to fit properly when moved further back than the stock location. I know there are a couple people out there that are running either a P200 or P180 and I would like to hear from them about what they did if they used the stock pipe. I could always cut the pipe extensions to shorten them but I would still have the problem of the pipe hitting the bottom of the fuse when the bell mouth is pushed down to line up with the turbine. I suppose I could angle the mounts so that the rear of the turbine raises up to meet the pipe, but if I don't have to then one less thing to do.

I am also concerned about the amount of, or lack there of, space between the the fuse former and the turbine. Looks like a lot of cooling air will be choked off from the pipe.

Hi Ian,

Egil Wigert flies his (all his jets in fact) with a P200. Problem was that with thrust vectoring the stock nozzles melted so Eggs had a metal guy make him aftermarket steel nozzles that could handle the heat. If you are building this for Dantley, ask him about Eggs' contact info. I put them in touch with each other. Good luck bud.

Yes, it is Dantley's but we are foregoing the thrust vectoring so no need to worry about that problem.

Shaz, does Egil have an RCU screen name that I could PM him at? I heard Lavi in Oz has a P200 shoe horned into one as well.

So I just spoke to Jorge from RCI and it sounds like there is a P200 pipe for the plane. Looks like we will have to check that out, unless someone has had the cojones to use the stock pipe?

No one out there with install photos?

Well I guess I will just turn this into a build thread until someone who has one these flying with a P200 has some pics to share!! ;);)
Below is a video of the making of a nose former for a removable nose via pitot tube fastener.

Great Anton, thats helps. Looks like the turbine was mounted too high in Dantley's plane, will have to fix that. Also we were having problems with the pipe fitting properly, it does not seem to want to sit low enough without being smashed on the bottom of the fuse. It is also hitting the stab horns in the rear Anton, what do you think?

Hey Ian,
I have skymaster mig 29 flying with a p200 and with the standard pipe non vectoring. The horns hitting the pipe is not an issue. You just have to play around with the jetcat engine mount to centre it in the pipe or glue some ply to the turbine mounts in the plane. My pipe also touches the fuse and will do so with any turbine thats installed. I have some ceramic blanket between the fuse and pipe. If you were only running it on the ground over time it may be any issue but in flight with air cooling its fine. I have only 6 flights with the 200 so far but the standard pipe is holding up well. The other thing you have to do is move the front fuel tank far enough forward so you can move the turbine forward enough to allow enough space between the NGV and tailpipe. Another option is to cut the tailpipe at the bell mouth. Cutting it at the other end wont work.
Regards Levi

RE: Skymaster Mig29 with P200

Thanks for the description Levi. It just seems that when I push down on the pipe to get it to line up with the turbine that I am squishing it so much that its taking away that cooling space between the outer wall and the inner wall and I am afraid that it will burn a hole in the pipe. I will take a look at it again tonight and see what is doable.

Alright, well during lunch time I moved the turbine forward on its mounts and this seems to have helped out quite a bit. There is now a good amount of clearance between the rear former and the turbine and the stock pipe now seems to fit better. I did not have to "squish"it as much so once I get some ceramic blanket and slather on some BVM heat shield I think we will be good to go.

I also got the threaded insert glued into the nose former and cut the slots in the fuse to accept the former. Next up will be getting the pitot threaded rod shortened and fit and then glue in the former and its supports.

Jim,

I got your message and to answer your question about the CNC machine. It is a JoesCNC model 2006. It is in my garage and I am starting to use it more on a regular basis, especially with my A-6 project. A buddy of mine bought the kit and I helped him put it together. Right now it is in my garage since he has no room for it and I have more "work" for it than him right now. The electronics and driver board and such are all mine as well as the motors. I am planning to build one of his 4x4 Hybrids once we find a house with a 2 car garage and I have the room. Below is a link to his site.

Man, the -29 is a beautiful jet. Really cool build Ian! Dantley, where are you flying your big block jets these days??

Thanks alot Anton. I cant fault the mig. It looks and flys like a dream. Dantly you will love this thing especially with the 200. Ian looks like hes doing a great job.

Been getting a good amount of work done on the Mig. The extensions for all rear servos have been run. I installed the nose former with the pitot attachment, works good. I moved on to laying out the equipment install and decided to make a couple of decks for the stuff. I took some internal measurements and then drew up some stuff on the computer then over to the CNC. Everything fit pretty good and I was pleased with the way it tidied up the inside. Next will be placement of everything and making sure it is all functional and accessible.

It has been slow going the last couple days but have managed to get a few things done. I put some paint on the forward mounting boards and started putting on the ceramic blanket for the heat-shielding. I used some silicone adhesive from the local auto-parts store to glue it down.

Permatex makes an orange high heat silicone, any merit to using that to secure the blanket? Or is that overkill...:D I want one of these bad! I think it will be my winter project.
