BVM UB with CROW?

Hi Guys,

Setting up my UB and wondering if anybody has tried just a little bit (1/4"-1/2") of CROW on the plane before? We have a short 550 foot runway and fly at 5500 feet altitude, trying to avoid any runoffs. I am keen to hear if anybody has tried CROW on this plane before.

I understand many will chime in saying "don't do it, it's not necessary" but that avoids answering the question: Has anybody tried it?

Thanks in advance,

Shaz

Hi Shaz,
I have 2 UB's and both are set up with Crow. Joe C!!!

Ravill also flies his UB with crow.

Same here. A little crow goes a long way for a lot of things!

Sweet Joe, Chad, Dantley, any idea how much is dialed in? Obviously use the flap guage provided for landing flap measurements, but how much aileron up?

I think I had about a half inch...

Yup, I do!

I use just about 1/4 inch. I love crow. The only jet I don't use it is my BVM F-86 that has an old school P-60 in it. I stalled that thing 3 times on the maiden... But I now relearned how to fly an underpowered Jet! So I don't do that anymore! :D

what did you notice differently with the crow? what was your UB doing that made you use crow?

From the first flight, crow was used, I never landed the UB without crow, it always was in my set up.

Joe, you use 1/2" up as well? Maybe less?

I wish Joe, with a 1 year old and 3 year old, its all I can do to get out on a Saturday to fly... [:o]

Wish you guys the best event yet! Maybe next year!!! :D

That BVM F86 sounds like the perfect candidate for reflex on the ailerons for landing, this would give the wing wash out lower the stalling speed.

RE: BVM UB with CROW?

The BVM F86 absolutely does NOT need crow, reflex or anything else it has washout in the wing as is and is totally docile at the stall, in fact throughout the flight regime. ! I have and fly one, PST 600. Anyway, washout or crow does not in itself reduce the stalling speed.
DG !

RE: BVM UB with CROW?

It may not reduce the overall stalling speed, but reflex will certainly lowers the speed at which point the tip of the wing stalls as it adds wash out and lowers the angle of attack at the tip.

RE: BVM UB with CROW?

Actually the opposite is true. If you dump lift at the tips by upsetting the ailerons, (as the VC10 did at high weights for wing bending relief) then the inboard section of the wing needs to compensate by generating MORE lift and will therefore stall at higher speed, albeit the same a A of A. !

If you need to reduce approach and or stall speed then aileron droop works eg, F4, F18, Buccaneer and numerous other aircraft, including the A380 I believe. ! Nope, leave the BVM F86 exactly as it was designed, flies great !

Only if you want to keep the same glide path does the inboard section of the wing need to produce more lift, but in the situation we are talking about the reason for dumping lift i.e. a landing situation is to increase the decent rate, the approach is controlled with throttle and elevator, we are after all flying models and not full size with the advantage of a stall indicator, full crow braking has distinct advantages as anyone who has used it will agree especially if they fly from a small field.

No offense guys, but can you take this discussion to another forum, am only concerned about the BVM UB and people who have had experience with CROW with it and how much they have dialed in.

Thanks! ;)

I'm curious because I have a UB and have been flying it for 2 years no crow, and find it easy to land and good at short field landings. The crow definetly helped the bobcats and Kingcat those of you that have put crow in the UB what kind of landing lenthgs including roll off are you getting? The UB has always flet very solid in the pattern, and approach to me.

The first two UB 's I saw fly at jet events broke there nose gears out due to the landing speed being just a little to fast, although they looked slow, resulting in the nose gear hitting the runway first then the uncontrolable bunny hop. I set my flaps at 40 degrees per the manual and found out why the two pilots I saw fly broke the nose gears. The airplane has to be so slow before the nose gear is above the mains its just uncomfortable. I set the flaps for 30 degrees then the ailerons to 1/2 inch crow and now the approach is nose high, throttle and speed control on final is much more managable and the airplane never touches the nose gear first even if its a little fast at touch down, plus it stay's stuck after the main touch. Over the numbers if you chop the throttle the airplane has a much better feel in the deceleration.

I agree, A couple of friends of mine fly the UB without crow and land it slower than my BVM Electra.
