Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

1 Attachment(s)
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">I acquired plans to build a Giant JetsF16. I scanned the title and specs but have summarized the detailsas well.</div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">The model is 92&rdquo; length and 60&rdquo; WS. Estimated dry weight is 38 pounds. The design calls for a .91 OS ducted fan but this sounds like a very heavy plane for a single ducted fan. The wing loading based on the specs looks to be 8.56oz/ft which is pretty low. My intention is to build the plane with a turbine. Does anyone have any opinion on what size turbine to consider for this or if this is a good candidate at all?</div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">Before I spend a lot of hours building this, I thought to ask if anyone here has any experience with Giant Jet Inc. plans to speak to how well their planes turn out or better if anyone has built and/or flown one of theseF16jets. I believe this company is long since dissolved.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

IIRC that's a Josh Harel design i saw a short kit with the fiberglass parts quiet a few yrs back but never saw it completed and fly. have seen his A10 with two byrofan/os90 fly, it wasn't any performance setup but it flew great looked like.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

what sizeturbine do you think? how do you figure it flew on a single ducted fan (os91 and ramtek or dynamax) pushes maybe 10 -12 lbs. 38 pound plane with 12 pound DF sounds real slumpy to me....

Better to figure this out before I spend countless hours building it.

Ialso see that it says 38 lbs max so maybe this is just the upper limit for weight.

you don't have to have 1-1 thrust to fly, we flew lots of ducted fans in the days that were way less then that. search RCU for Don W. Shanks screen name shanksow, i think he had one of these and he might can help with info on this bird.

just got word that Dean Lassek (A10FLYR) also had one.............best of luck.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

F-16s are very forgiving on power to weight, the entire fuselage is pretty much a lifting surface, more power will give more performance and ability to do more maneuvers, but I'm sure an 18 lb class turbine would push it along very scale like.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

Sounds like a 30lb turbine will be too much then.

I bought the same plans off ebay haven't done anything with them yet I think limybob was trying to kit it

F16's fly great in all sizes. At 38 pounds I would not use less then 30lb engine. The K 170 at 37 pounds for around $3K sounds like a good fit.

Thanks Kevin,

I was thinking 1:1 as well. I am not sure what the 38 lb is in the attached pic pertainsto for sure. The way it sounds is that this plane is 38 # on the high end. Iam thinking that I may be able to build this less than 38 pounds though. Ideally 30 dry (including engine)

I think it would be a good build but you will have to make a lot of the parts your self canopy tail pipe all the glass parts he shows in the plans .I called him about canopy ect said none available

if you can find the old scale builders magazine, it has an article on the f16

Yes I have done Josh's F-16. Made a plug and molds for a two piece fuse. I wish I could remember for sure but I think it was 23 - 25#. I flew it here in Denver, 5280 asl with OS 91 and Byrofan, Dynamax fan, Harel fan and of course a RAM 750. Flew with high AOA with Byrofan and Harel fan but the Dynamax was able to push it into faster flight so once up on step it was ok. 18# thrust Ram was good for scale flight. 38# turbine???? I don't want my name associated with it!!!! :)

Still have the molds for glass parts and one and two place canopy plugs...no cockpit. Was working on inlet ducting but ran out of desire to finish the kit. Maybe I can find a few pictures.

would you be willing to make the glass parts and canopy

I had prints made tonite. Anyone have any building tips for making this plane? Notes on the plans arevery basic.

Not to offend anyone... but that's why I never gave ducted fan planes a second look back in the day. (sorry, just my thoughts) but turbines are a good time. :D

Personally... 32Lb's worth of model... I would want it close to 1:1. You can always throttle back. But, with a low wing loading, it will fly on a much smaller turbine. As above... the kit was intended to fly with 10~12 Lbs of thrust... so I would think a 20lb turbine would get it off the ground. BUT... when you point the nose up... and you mash the throttle... you don't want it slowing down.

Just my 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

according to the notes on these plans, the desired wieght is 17 pounds dry. 38 pounds is a max for the model. Yes I figrued with low wing loading that less trubine would be needed as well.

RE: Question about Giant Jets Inc F16 Plans

Ihad a look at the article. How does this model compare with other newer builds? The wing loading being as low as it iswas probably done to accomodate a ducted fan. With wing loading so low, it seems to me that this thing will be slow moving due to drag. Bigger motor might be a waste... Probably stick with a 20#.

Any thoughts on this?
