JPX260 - Help needed.
Hi,
I'm new to all this! I have obtained a JPX260 with what appears to be everything I need to use it apart from a High pressure air starting system. I intend to purchase an Scuba air bottle to start the thing. But need to know what the smallest bottle I can get away with is? The smallest I've found is 3litre.. is this ok? Also, with the oil system there appears to be no oil pump! But there is a T-off to a sort of valve connector. Could this be a air pressurised oil system? If so, what sort of pressure is needed? Any information at all would be gratefully received. Also any costs incurred will be reembursed.. eg: manuals etc.. ( I don't have any paper work with it! ) Many thanks, Mark |

Try this guy.

While I can't be sure, The Jet boat on this guys site may have been built by a friend of mine. It used my old JPX 260 as the power source. I was, before he sold it was the only one to drive it as I had the waiver to run it. You need a large bottle to get thru a days flying with a JPX but a small bottle will start it. The old is tapped off of the compressor side and it is imperative that it not leak in any way or bearing failure will occur. I will try and help in any way I can.

Hi Mark,
Is it a gas or kerosene JPX that you have? I have the manuals for the gas version , if you need it PM me and I'll send you a copy. The 3 liter air bottle is nice because of its size and weight but you will only have 4-5 starts with that... The pressure of the oil system comes from the engine pressure, on top of the engine you will find a pressure nipple just next to the oil feed nipple. the T is to connect a gauge to monitor max pressure (max thrust) during start up. Regards Florent |

Mark,
Your best insurance is to find someone with some JPX starting experience to help you hands on. Its easy to toast the bearings on the propane version. Vin... |

Mark,
You will need as BIG of a scuba tank as you can get. The JPX uses a lot of air during the start sequence, and since you are new to this type of turbine you will use up even more air. The size air bottle you mentioned, you'll be lucky if you can get one start from it, and that's if everything works as it should. I used to carry (2) two 80 cubic feet scuba tanks with me. |

Another thought, if you have not all ready obtained a pressure regulator yet, look into getting a regular gas bottle regulator, like a Victor or Mathewson. These allow you to dail the pressure up higher, and can flow more air. This allows you to spool the engine up to higher speeds and get cooler starts, and in the end you use less air. I went to my local dive shop and they got me in contact with the company that did the repair/maintance on their compressor. That company had the correct hardware to connect my SCUBA bottle to the regulator (DIN to 1/4 npt with a filter). You could also think about using an industrial compressed air bottle, however they are heavy compaired to a SCUBA bottle.
Have fun with it. Steven |
JPX Manual
I too have a 260 propane manual if you need to get a copy. My advice would be to find someone who either has one or has run one to show you how to start it. While not difficult, it is a little different and if you dont have the right hook up for oil, etc., you will have a neat 'wallhanger'. If you can post some pics of what you have, maybe we can offer some advice as to what fittings you have/need. But, wait for the manual!

Hi Everyone,
Many many thanks for all the information. Special thanks to Rider-60 ( Florent ) in France for agreeing to post me a copy of the manual. So many Ideas!!! :) I dare not even attempt starting it until it is correctly setup, as you all say: I could end up with an expensive ornament! I await the manual, then hopefully with a friend who has built a turbine from a car turbo we may start it. Although if anyone in the UK who does not mind a trip to cambridgeshire OR I could travel to their place then I would be eternally grateful for a experienced person to watch over me! I am off to the local dive shop this weekend to check out the scuba bottles and regulators. But if I get one , It will probably be ordered online as the local shop appears quite expensive! Many many thanks, Mark |

You should pay the extra money and make friends with your local dive shop. This is important. Otherwise you may end up with equipment, and no way to get any air.
They don't have to fill your scuba bottle if they don't want to, and they don't have to. |
jpx
Sixshooter is correct, while you are there have them adjust the reg up as hi as it will go. I messed around with mine and got about 160lbs out of it, nice smooth starts but eats up some air.Once mastered thouht, it aint so bad...
