RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Maidened my MIG-15 (2012 version) today, and I am now looking for somewhere to get markings/insignas. Any ideas, or do people go the DIY route (masking and spraying/painting)?
BTW, it flew beautifully :) Kim |

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Hi guys,
I just received my CARF mig15 and it looks really nice. Put the wings/tail on and found that the supplied carbon wing rods are very loose in the tubes that are glued into the fuselage....at least a mm slop! Totally useless as they are. They seem to fit the tubes in the wings fairly well though. Am I missing something? Any ideas for fixing this short of wrapping the spars in ali tape or cutting the old tubes out of the fuse and laying up my own tubes then gluing them in? That's a lot of work and job that I am not keen to embark on....not to mention the fact that I sould not have to.[:@] Craig. |
RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Apply several coats of clear paint (I use epoxy paints from Klass Kote) on the area you need to build up on the carbon rod. Don't waste your time using a tape...it will ball up and cause u more headache and time than building it up with paint.

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
The original carf mig did not have wing tubes in the fuse. I don't think they have any use other than to guide the rod thru the fuse. As long as the rods are tight in the wings I would not worry about it.

I'd be very surprised if its a mm...thats huge. I have seen tubes when the shrinkage varies the fit, its worse on the smaller tube dia's The Rookie one used to suffer too. A light sand to key and a brushed coat oif wing skinning resin should cover it and allow you to sand to fit with a smaller dowl and some 240 grit paper. The Factory usually covers this before shipping (your wings might have been done) Sorry this one slipped through QC. Its near impossible to mould a perfect fit...when I did my MR Lightning it took me 6 attempts to get four tubes!! Dw |
RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Hi Craig
I've built one of the old versions and I'd like to confirm just how much this new version has been improved. In particular I'd like to see how well the top hatches fit on the new version, has CARF paid some attention to this area. The old kit was poor in this area and required a lot of rework to get it right. Also, I'd like to see what the retract mounts look like, nose and wings. The wing mounts on the old kit had to be reworked, what do the new mounts look like? So.....would you mind taking some photos of these areas and posting them here. I'm sure lots of other people would be curious about these changes as well. Cheers Rod Watkins |
RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
I will try to get some photos this weekend....flat out with work atm.
Thanks for the reply Dave. I know, a mm is huge.....it might be a little under that but there is a heap of slop. Will have to look at the best solution to fix it I guess and report back. Regards, Craig. |

You mean a mm movement at the end of the spar? A mm difference in the dia's would be like a different world! Dave |
RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
I find that the classic card MIG15 has glass fibre wing tubes that flex way too much for my liking. So much so that I have not test flown my airplane since the last 2 months. Should I be concerned or is my worry unfounded?
|
RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Which bit flexes? You have clearance on the tube? The glass rods don't flex! Some movement is usually fine, free movement is bad as a sudden shock is worse than gentle bending. My Rookie wings flexed both ways a huge amount :-)

Should I be concerned or is my worry unfounded? I have the 2012 version, and the wings flex. I personally do not think it is possible to eliminate any flexing on this model.. the rods (CF on mine) are short and the wings are "long". That is just how it is;) Go fly it, scale flying (and some non scale..) won´t breake the wings/rods IMO. Kim |

So come to nagpur and lets test fly the mig...

Would love to, it's only the 45degrees c in Nagpur that's keeping me away.

Ok then, my Mig is now ready for takeoff with markings (thanks Ralle/Tailormadedecals.com) and weathering.
Here is a small vid of stills put together:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V7KA...1&feature=plcp Kim |

Very nice, it looks very realistic.

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
That looks great. I am finding it hard to find reasons why not to order one of these :) Are the markings the waterside or rub on type? I guess you applied them straight to the silver gel coat with some oils to weather it? Whatever you did it looks superb!

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Thanks guys,
This is my first real scale project, and I have done some mistakes along the way... But this is an old russian workhorse, so I have told myself each time I have discovered small (and some not so small..) mistakes, that it is probably more scale than "picture perfect". Many repairs and maintainance on the full size, were done in a "hurry" and/or at remote places with less than perfect conditions. With that in mind, I am quite happy. The russian stars on my Mig, are maskings (Tailormadedecals.com). I used rattle cans, with ok result...nothing more;) All the writing/lettering/warnings and stuff (Tailormadedecals.com), are rub on type. First time I ever used them, and I was very pleased with the result. Just don´t rub too hard, or you will deform the area you are working on[X(] I don´t know a word in russian, so I just put them on where they looked "ok". That might bring out laughter for someone able to read russian:) The weathering was done copying what I found in another rcu mig thread... Oil paint (black/brown/white) mixed with linseed oil. Very nice to work with, but takes forever to dry... |
