Source for dural wing tubes

Hi

I am looking for a wing tube for my SM big Hawk. I have received 2 from SM, but they just don't get the point. The first tube is a dural one and it looks sturdy, but it is short in lenght. The second tube is a carbon one, but because it could brake, they have filled it with resin and now weights 300gr.[:o].

Does any one know a good source for reinforced dural tubes? I need one with 38mm OD.

Regards

Nuno

I do not know that term: reinforced dural tubes, A lot of old plane that were fabric covered had sheet metal on the leading edge and it was called a dural nose!
Like to know what you are talking about.

TNT landing gear sells wing tubes, the nearest size to 38mm (1.496") is listed here. http://www.tntlandinggear.com/store/shop/wing_tubes.htm

Nuno, in the USA we have a supplier for all sorts of hardware. It's called McMaster Carr ( www.mcmaster.com ). They have aluminum tube in different hardnesses. Check their web site and see if they have what you want. The only problem is whether they will ship to your country.

Just guessing but I think;

"Dural" is probably short for "duraluminum", which in the US is simply "aluminum". In the UK they call the same stuff "aluminium". [&:]

Ola Nuno, tudo em ordem?

I faced the same problem with the Viper wing tube.

I just used a thick wall (about 2mm) 1 1/2 inch o.d. aluminum tube wich is twice as heavy as the original one but stronger, even if it is not sold as dural. Later I sent it to a local machinist to reduce a bit the outside diameter to fit the airplane fuselage and wings.

Um abraço, Enrique.

Dural. I dont know what that is. And not all aluminum is created equal as there are lots of different yield strengths out there.
Carbon is usually a good choice and its unlikely you need solid but of course it does increase the AMOI. Post crash Ive seen nothing left but a solid carbon rod sticking out of the ground. those things are tough.

If you want aluminum for your models, the aircraft grades are the way to go, 6061-T6 for anything that is flat [Note: 6061-T6 dose not bend tight enough for small parts, and most likely crack a/o break]. Then it is 5052-H32 is A/C grade bendable aluminum. Both drill and tap well. Carbon is about 25% lighter the aluminum and much stronger the aluminum, allowing you to use smaller components.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. In fact what I am looking for is a decent wing tube that can cope the high G manouvers in a jet.

Dural is the short term for duraluminium. It is what you guys in the US call alloy, right? It is a harder aluminium with more shear strenght.

Also found this for people in Europe
