dented turbine cans ????
 

I took my P120 out of a plane today, an the case is actually slightly dented from the rail to which it was mounted, and i also have 2 small dents from the clamps which held the turbine on ..

The engine turns smoothly, and ran fine durring the last start ..

does it matter if the outer can gets slightly dented ? how much of a structual significance does the outer case have ? is there any way that this would afect engine performance ? could this ofset the shaft or throw it out of balance ? im not familiar with the internal structure of the P120, so im not suire if i just should not worry, or if i need this fixed .//

Wojtek,

The small dents in the can that occur from ounting lugs are normal and fine. They will not effect the operation of the engine at all, and are just cosmetic. Some guys wrench these engines down a little too hard and will cause the small dents (my original P-120 is the same way), before we learn they only have to be snugged down and not tightened beyond belief.

You have no worries my friend. Bolt that engine in place and enjoy.

Alan Cardash Fed Exed his JetCat P-120 to me before Fla Jets this year so that he could avoid the issues of bringing it on a trans-Atlantic flight. When I got it, Fed Ex had put a pretty substantial dent in the outer can. Definitely far larger than you would get from mounting straps. It must have been just about contacting the combustion chamber on the inside. Alan was concerned so I grabbed Mr. Wilcox about it when we got to Fla Jets. He said not to worry. In fact, he said that sometimes when you run them with a major dent like that, it will actually blow it back out. That did not happen with Alan's, but he ran it and we both flew it just fine for many flights. It will be just fine.

If the dent bothers you....Do this to fix it; Take the can off. Using a spoon, gently rub the spoon on the inside of the can across the dent while pushing out toward the outside of the can. The dents will disappear. The JetCat cans are pretty thin/soft. I've removed small dents pressing with my thumb instead of a spoon. The spoon just makes the job easier and smoother. This is the same method that companies like "Dents Away" paintless dent repair use to fix dings/hail damage.
