Battery Fire ... Full Scale
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...reamliner.html
Looks like its not just our models that are at risk of battery fire. Maybe they were using I NiCd charger on a LiPo :D :D glad not one was hurt ! ~V~ |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
Wonder if they are going to shut down Boston airport permanetly because a jet caused a fire [X(]:D:D
and away we go;) Thanks dave |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
NO, but there is talk of banning turbines there.:D

RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
See this is what happens when inexperienced pilots with no turbine waivers get in the cockpit!
:D:D ~V~ |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
They should have not left the batteries unattended, duh?

I've been with the company ten years and have never heard that term.

RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
I hope it didn't happen during a "burn ban"
|
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
Everyone knows that you should take the batteries out of the plane for charging.
What were they thinking????? |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
Some of the guys in our club were right. Turbine powered airplanes are too dangerous.
|
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
we need to do something about how thesde guys get their waiver.
|
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
we laugh, but thats exactly what it was.. it was a lithium battery fire on the 787 dreamliner... dont know the reason, but the 787 is the new "electric" jet.. it has a massive electrical system because alot of the functions that were previously powered by bleed air, such as anti ice... are now electrically driven.. big fuel savings..
so its having some growing pains.. the FAA launched an airworthiness investigation today.. go figure.. |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
Wow, de-ice is typically a 500F Bleed Manifold. Hard to imagine replacing it with an electric powered heater. You would imagine that bleeding off of that high bypass NextGen engine would not be a big deal in terms of performance.
|
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
As you well know, anything that 'bleeds' air for ANYTHING from your G suit to cockpit pressurization to whatever, reduces thrust. Boeing has chosen an engineering solution to not use bleed air in order to not reduce thrust and increase fuel efficiency. And, imagine that, there are some growing pains. Disclaimer: I'm a retired Navy fighter pilot now working for Boeing, but trust me, the F-22 has had significantly more problems than this and they continue production and flying. And, the F-14 (particularly with the POS P&W TF-30 engine) had staggering problems, but fought through them. Similarly, Boeing will figure this out and the 787 will be a great success. In my humble opinion, of course!

RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
I'm aware but you'd think that bleeding off a high bypass engine like this would make adding an electrical heating system unviable.
Not sure Boeing got it right here. |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
I guess the future will tell whether all the Boeing engineers got it right or you did! :)

I had a Boeing engineer for breakfast!

RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
FAA just grounded all 787's until the battery problems are resolved.
United is the only airline in the US flying the 787. |
RE: Battery Fire ... Full Scale
My comment on the Boeing engineers was regarding their use of electrical power for some functions instead of bleed air. The battery problems appear to be related to Lithium Ion batteries. The discrepant batteries are being investigated now to see if they were manufactured in the same lot, had similar discrepancies, etc. Boeing's contention is that we have over one million flight hours on that type battery with no issues. Lots of hard work, investigation and probably some engineering to do before this is resolved. More to come.
